The following clever statistics from a Kentucky newspaper shows some ingenuity and covers a wide field of information for those who care to learn: “The distiller gets four gallons of whiskey, which retails at $16.80; the farmer gets 25 cents, the United States government gets $4.40, the railroad company gets sl, the manufacturer gets $4, the drayman gets 15 cents, the retailer gets $7, the consumer gets drunk, the wife gets hungry, the children get rags, the politician gets office.” When an organ of the liquor traffic begins to be decidedly uneasy it Mould seem that the advocates of prohibition are doing’ good work. The echo of such a sentiment is found clearly in a recent utterance of the Texas Liquor Dealer,” a trade paper devoted to the interests which its name indicates. The following would seem a feeble cry from a flying foe: Oui duty is plain; keep both parties in the field; divide the spoils be tween them; prevent the hopeless defeat of either. We have the power to do this. Let us use it with fear and trembling, for one blunder, one false step, may precipitate our ruin. Ah! but you ask, ‘How shall you prevent the fanatics from leaving the old parties?’ We answer, ‘Money will do it.’ A good, high license to help pay their taxes will pacify their conscience—noth ing else will.” The Prohibition candidate for Governor of New York is Captain Randall and his supporters are doing good work pending the great November cam paign. H It It CHEAPER FARM LAND. Southwest Offers Best Opportunities for Securing Homes. Many farmers in the Northern and Eastern States are selling their high priced lands and locating in the Southwest. Many who have been unable to own their homes in the older country are buying land in the new country. Unusual opportunities exist along the lines of the Missouri Pacific-Iron Mountain Route. The rich, alluvial, delta lands and river bottom lands of Southeast Missouri, Eastern Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas, capable of pro ducing 60 bushels of corn, a bale of cotton, 4 to 6 tons of alfalfa, 150 bushels of potatoes, and other grains, vegetables and hay crops, can be bought for $7.50 to $15.00 per acre. When cleared and slightly improved will rent for $4.00 to $6.00 per acre cash. Uplands more rolling, lighter soil, adapted to fruit growing-—peaches, peais, pl grapes, berries—also melons, tomatoes and other vegetables, can be bought for $5.00 to SIO.OO per acre in unimproved state. Many places with small clearings and some improvements can be bought very cheap. This is a fine stock country. No long winter feeding. Free range, pure water, mild climate. A healthy, growing country, with a great future. Write for map and descriptive literature on Missouri, Arkansas, Louisi ana, Texas, Kansas or Indian Territory. Very cheap rates on first and third Tuesdays of each month. Address, H. D. WILSON, A. G. P. A., Memphis, Tenn., or H. C. TOWNSEND, G. P. & T. A., St. Louis, Mo. The Golden Age for October 25, 1906.
