U. made a unique stand for their cause not long ago. They decided on making a thorough canvass of the town in which they lived in order to determine which merchants were advocates of prohibition and which were not; having made the desired discovery they at once determined to deal only with such merchants as were in sympathy with the great movement which they represented, and they adhered strictly to this deteimination. Yet another interesting event in the history of the W. C. T. U. in the same State (Illinois) was an exhibit by the members of the Cook County branch in the First Methodist Church, Chicago, There were a dozen booths prettily decorated and aranged around the Sunday school room. These booths were devoted to demonstrations of alcoholic patent medicines, displays, shown in glass bottles, illustrating the effects of drink on the different parts of the body, as well as many other features relating to the g'reat reform movement. Such exhibits are ceitairly conducive to increasing the inter est in a work of this kind and to encouraging enthusiasm. “Virtuous Deadwood.” The following extract from the St. Paul (Minn.) “Dispatch” seems to be one more conclusive argument in the case of “The Sajoon versus Crime,” and one which carries its own lesson: “lor the first time in its history there is not a single county prisoner in the r awrence County jail, and the board bill for prisoners in June was less than any month during the last thirty years. “Only a few years ago there were forty-two licensed liquor houses in Deadwood; last July only thirty licenses were issued, and this year thje number has fallen to nineteen. The old-time wild and wooly Deadwood is a thing of the past, and nothing but tombstones and memory remind one of the day of Deadwood Dick, Calamity Jane, Wild Bill Hickok and the Beauty of Brimestone Bar.” TTI7 A TUVDC lA7 A RTT*I?TI Villige and rural schools.
