"i'X * Senator E. W. Carmack.
It is more than possible that the presidency of the Antin Saloon League
of Tennessee will be tendered to United States Sehiator, E. W. Carmaek,
when his term of office expires March 4, 1907.
Senator Carmack in his campaign for re-election, was opposed by the
united wdiiskey interests, and in his speeches he declared that if he found
this interest was powerful enough to efxercise political 'control he would
never “let up” in his fight until the last saloon was driven out of Ten
nessee.
Senator Carmack is a finished orator, and a man of the highest degree
of intellect combined with a ready flow of language which seems almost mar
velous to his hearers. While he has doubtless offers to appear on the lecture
platform, where he has already met with much success, and to occupy the
editorial chair, which he has filled with conspicuous ability, he will give the
Anti-Saloon League offer serious consideration by reason of his decided
views on the liquor question.
No man ever made a greater reputation in the United States Senate
within the same time, than has Sen tor Carmack, and his attitude toward
the whiskey element of his state may be regarded as most significant of the
trend toward prohibition of the political leaders of the South.
Winchester, Tennessee, Votes Against Saloons.
“Tn an election called by Hon. H. H. Horton, legislator-elect from this
county,” says the Nashville Banner in a special from Winchester, Tenn.,
“and held today, to determine the question of whether Winchester’s charter
should be abolished in order to take advantage of the Adams law, there
were' 141 votes cast for ‘No saloons,’ and no votes cast ‘For saloons.’ Mr.
Horton ran for the legislature on the platform to abolish saloons in Win
chester upon a majority vote of the white citizens of the town. There have
been two legal elections on the question and one agreed election, all of them
resulting in a victory for the ‘ wets. ’
“Today’s election was called by Mr. Horton in fulfilment of the pledge
of his platform. No one voted except those in favor of abolishing the
charter. It is not known what hope, if any, the ‘wets’ have of blocking
Mr. Horton’s policy. The general impression is that Mr. Horton’s election
settled the question, and that the charter will be abolished as soon as the
legislature meets.”
The Segregation Law.
The legislature of Tennessee has recently passed a bill which relegates
the 'saloons of the city of Nashville to a limited area of space. This bill
states that the saloons in the city may not occupy, in the aggregate, more
than one square mile of territory. At presebt the city is supporting sa
loons in almost every locality with a large number in the suburbs. By this
law it will be impossible for saloons in outlying districts to continue, as the
area covered by them will exceed that included in the law mentioned.
“The Searchlight.”
We are in receipt of a most attractive publication called the “Search
light, ” which is the official organ of the Anti-Saloon League of Southern
California. It is a publication which contains the latest news of interest to
the advocates of prohibition, as well as strong and stirring editorials regard
ing the great cause. It is impossible to estimate the full value of a publica
tion of this sort, but we belie've the work of the Anti-Saloon League is
greatly helped by just such vital organs as the “Searchlight.”
