Increase Your Yields *■
Per Acre
We will convince you that you ■
■ can “increase your yields per acre”
and you won’t have to keep it a se- ■
cret, either. Read what Messrs. ■
Wherry & Son, of the Magnolia
■ Fruit Farm, Durant, Miss., write:
“From two acres of strawberries, ■
■ on which 1,000 pounds of
Virginia-Carolina Fertilizers
per acre were used, we cleared a
profit of $75.00 per acre more than
the other 1436 acres of strawberries ■
which had only 500 pounds of this
fertilizer.” Thus double the quan-
■ tity of these fertilizers on each acre ■
■ of any crop, and more than doubly
“increase your yields per acre.” Be ■

A Visit From Mrs. Carrie Nation.
The Golden Age was recently favored by a visit from Mrs. Carrie Na
tion, who is generally known as “the woman with the hatchet,” While we
do not altogether approve Mrs. Nation’s earlier methods of attacking the
prohibition question, nor do we endorse her present position as a part of
a theatrical company, yet we are glad to learn her reasons for this last con
nection, and. also, to hear from her own lips the fact that she no longer
employed a “cutting” manner of dealing with the liquor traffic.
In referring to her affiliation with the theatre, Mrs. Nation said she
reached more persons that way than she could hope to do in a church, and
she quoted the Savior’s attitude toward the “publican and the sinner,” as
well as the command that “Ye should go forth to heal the sick, not the
well,” for she claims that more “soul-sick” persons seek the theatre than
are often found in a church.
Although no direct mention was made of her past custom of boldly
smashing the furnishings of saloons, Mrs. Nation volunteered the statement
that she no longer sought to remedy the liquor evil by attacking the effects
of it, but that she now aimed at the Cause! “I am not a Temperance
worker.” declared Mrs. Nation; “I believe in annihilation of the manufac
ture of liquor, and I do not believe that when Paul commanded that 'we
be temperate in all things,’ he had. any reference to liquor. I think he
meant ‘ temperance, ’ even in safe and pleasant things; but he did not mean
to betemperate’ in evil-doing. There is every possible hedge put around
a man to make it hard for him to steal or kill or commit any other crime,
but licenses are sold to make it easy for him to get drunk and thus lead to
every sin in the decalogue! lam against the manufacture of liquor— if it
isn’t made it cannot be sold, and until it is considered a crime to make it,
we can never hope to entirely suppress the selling of it.”
Mrs. Nation made a round of Atlanta liquor dealers, both wholesale and
retail, and she did not spare the proprietors in her denunciations. Her visit
to Atlanta may do much good to a class who could not be reached by more
conservative methods.
The Dram Shops and Taxation.
(Extracts from an Article by Prof. Geo. E. Foster, M. P.)
The property of a community is what bears the taxes. The more prop
erty there is to be assessed, the lighter the tax rate will be. Suppose an
amount of $3,000 is to be raised by a certain time. If the assessable value
of the town is $600,000, the tax rate will be 5 mills; but if the assessable
value of the town is $1,000,000, the tax rate will be only 3 mills to the dol
lar. So we see that whatever increases the accumulation of property de
creases the rate of taxation; whatever decreases the accumulation of property
increases the rate of taxation. This is a simple principle which any one can
see at a glance, and it only becomes necessary for us to consider, in addition,
the influence of the dram shops upon the accumulation of property. In the
first place, they are the enemies of thrift, the teachers of waste.
Day and night they stand open to invite each passer-by. In them the
workman spends his dimes, the youth his dollars, and the richer man his
hundreds. They are the waste banks into which slip, bit by bit, the small
Surplus of the workingman, and the spare change of the artisan. Every week
they gather in thousands of dollars which would otherwise be deposited in
savings banks or be spent on home improvements and comforts.
Not only do the dram shops invite to first waste, but they turn this oc
casional spending into a fixed habit of waste, and drag by the chains of
appetite, their victim into constantly increasing expenditure for what is both
needless and harmful. And all the while the earnings of the patrons of the
dram shops are not allowed to accumulate into property, and consequently
the assessable value of the community is not increasing so far as they are
concerned, but rather is constantly diminishing.
The dram shops, therefore, “help pay the taxes” by decreasing the tax
rate. How thankful all rate-payers should be for the “help” of the sa
loon!
