THE FAITH GF ONE.
It wa« Sunday night In Goldfield and
Robert Payne walked slowly along
the way that was called a street. He
was full in the grasp of one of the old
restless, dissatisfied moods —a mood
that is always dangerous to the man or
woman who has not developed the in
ner self.
Lights flashed from the open doors,
but these were too dim to mar the
beauty of the night. The moon came
up full among a fleet of silvery clouds;
and the wind swept down cool and mis
ty from the mountains.
At one place he stood for a moment
looking in on a dozen tousled men
who were gambling. And he was Chris
tian enough to remember half sadly
that these men had been gaming all
day—it was a Sunday custom in Gold
field. One of the men glanced up half
scowling and he passed on.
Before he was quite aware of it he
stood in front of a bar. The scene
within gave him a thrill of disgust
and he was about to pass on when he
was suddenly seized with the old de
sire for drink. He had thought his old
enemy dead, or so nearly so that it
would not trouble him again. But it
had seized him fast. He folded his
hands behind him and stood fighting
with himself.
Why should he hold out and what
good had his resolutions done him? He
thought the question bitterly. The
light fell full on his face as he stood.
It was a handsome face; the mouth
was somewhat weak but the chin was
strong and beautifully moulded and
the eyes were blue as autumn skies.
The bar keeper looked up. “Come
in, Bob, and get a drink —anything
you like.”
The voice belonged to one of the
devil’s best instruments —a worthless
educated man.
“No, thank you. I’ve been out on
the mountains and I’m a bit tired. I
will travel on to the quarters.”
And Bob squared his shoulders reso
lutely and walked on.
“It does seem a little strange that
I should have thought so strongly cf
her just then —dear mother,” he said
gently. Then he wondered what she
was doing in her faraway home. No
doubt she was alone and thinking of
him. What else had she to think of?
“If things don’t mend by Christmas I’m
going back to her and the drug busi
ness.” The last words were uttered
with a little bitterness;
A little farther on he met a man
walking along with an air of utter
dejection. It was Jim Marby. He
remembered that Jim’s baby had been
buried the day before. It was such
a foolish thing for a man to bring a
woman to such a place, he thought, as
he remembered Mrs. Marby’s pale face
and the pink hands and laughing blue
eyes of the little baby.
“Hello, Jim,” he called in his soft
southern voice. The man returned his
salute and was about to pass on when
something in his face caused Bob to
turn and walk on with him.
“Say, Jim, can’t you take me along?
I’m dead lonesome.”
The other man looked up quickly.
He had adored the big Kentucky boy
every since he had sat up all through
one awful night holding his sick baby
in his arms, while the poor mother
rested and slept a little.
“I would be so glad if you would
go. It would cheer Jennie up so. She
likes you and the baby loved you. The
little fellow seemed to take to you
right from the first. It always has
seemed strange how animals and lit
tle folks know good folks. Jennie’s
mandolin came last week and she will
be so glad if you will play and sing
some for us. She tried to sing last
night but she just broke down.” Jim’s
voice broke and he stopped short.
In a few moments Bob had forgot-
