WOMEN WORKERS MEET IN CONVENTION
Georgia State Federation of Woman’s Clubs Convened October 22d to 24th in Taft Hall, in Atlanta.
IE Sixteenth Anniversary of the
uniting of the Women’s Clubs of
the State of Georgia to work to
gether for the good of one and
the united good of all,, was by far
the best session ever held since
their federation. How diligently
and well they have done their

from every part of the state. What was
needed in the South was also needed
in the North. The West also needed
the same reforms that were suggested for the
East, and the summary was: Right education
for the classes and right education for the
masses
Right Living Brought By Right Thinking.
Everywhere the Women’s Clubs, individually
and collectively, are urged to instill right
thinking into the masses of humanity by the
demonstration of right living, and showing
how a change in the environment will bring
forth the desired results of higher, more useful
life for all.
The Club life has been growing and spread
ing itself, since the last meeting, over one year
ago. There have been added to the number of
Clubs forty-six, making the number now in
the Federation. One hundred and seventy
one. What a band of women united for the
uplifting of all mankind in the State of Geor
gia, son as well as daughter, men as well as
women, babies and great-grandparents, repre
sentatives in every walk of life, each and every
one receiving the thought “that we all can
make to-morrow better than today.”
The Dangers to the American Home.
Our center of attraction and the standard
around which we all revolve, was set forth in
the talk of the National President, Mrs. Percy
Pennypacker, of Austin, Tex. She placed be
fore the Club members, in a very forceful and
instructive way, the dangers of the American
home. As the same danger is duplicated in
every State of the Union, I feel that her
thoughts along this line would be of helpful
interest to every reader of The Golden Age.
WORLD’S TEMPERANCE SUNDAY
Nov. 10th, 1912.
Time—743 to 735 B. C.
Hosea —7:1 to 16.
Place —Samaria.
THE GOLDEN TEXT: “Woe unto
them that rise up early in the morn
ing, that they may follow strong
drink; that tarry late into the night,
till wine inflame them.” Isa 5:11.
SUGGESTIVE THOUGHTS.
What Should I do?
F—Return unto the Lord. Vs. 1 to
8. It is a sad thing that God’s people
are ever wandering from Him. “He
would heal them,” “but they will not.”
(Matt. 23:37; Luke 13:34; Luke 19:42)
God is calling to the backsliders to
return. One of the great messages
of both the Old and New Testament is
“Return unto the Lord thy God.” (Hos.
14:1; I Sam. 7:34; II Cor. 30:5 to 9;
Isa 5:6, 7; Jer. 3:12 to 14; Jer. 4:1;
Joel 2:12, 13; Zech. 1:3, 4; Matt. 3:2;
Matt. 4:17; Acts 2:38; Acts 26:18 to
20). This message is needed now. The
professing Church has wandered far
from God. She Is filled with covet
eousness, which is idolatry. (Col. 3:5;
Eph. 5:5). Worldly pleasures, selfish
ness and false doctrines, SUe has fall*
SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON
Her position that the danger is the indiffer
ence of the father in the home, and his seem
ing to feel that he is justified in putting all
the responsibility on the mother, was so hand
led that I wish every father in our nation
could have heard it. It is, oh, so true. Can the
mother carry all of the load of responsibility
much longer? she asked. The mother is over
anxious, and is so burdened that joy is forced
out of home, and consequently the child whose
life must find some sunshine to live at all, is
forced to leave the paternal roof to find it, and
what do they find? Look at the dangers that
abound outside the home, that are prepared
for our sons and daughters, who are seeking
a little relaxation from the strain of toil and
study. Pleasure seems to be the goal which
our children are all trying to reach.
“A good time,” but what kind of a good
time do the majority of our sons and daugh
ters realize? The home is distressingly sad
dened by the care, burdens and anxiety of the
parents, and the results we can all see —our
girls are pushed into matrimony unprepared,
the cares of motherhood forced upon them be
fore they can realize the obligations that sur
round the responsibility.
The children of the rich, as well as the chil
dren of the poor, are surrounded with tempta
tion, the line that crosses every life, “that
marks their destiny, to the glory of despair,”
surrounds every human being, and the field
should be freed from every danger by the
powers which can make it good, and then
when our sons and daughters go forth
to seek a happier environment than they
realize, it will be pure and “free from any
thing that defileth.” But all of us must learn
that within each and every one is the Spirit
part of us waiting to be received and recog
nized and allowed to have the pre-eminence,
allowed to right the wrongs now in force in
the world. The Clubs must help to readjust
many a school curriculum, and try to train the
children to use the mind with the hand, and
to practice self-control, and we are now try
ing to bring kindergartens and universities to
en from the great heights of Pentes
costal joy and power because of ini
quity and there is great need for the
clear, loud, long call, “Return unto
the Lord thy God.” The whole book
of Hosea deals with backsliding and
gives us the cause, the result and the
cure for backsliding. Let us consider
some of them that are mentioned in
this chapter.
Ist, The Cause —Their wickedness
and iniquity (V. 2; Hos. 14:1). This
is the cause of all blacksliding.
2nd, The Result. (A). He is a liar.
(Hosea 7:1, 3; Hosea 11:12). The back
slider pretends to be living right
when he knows he is not. He says
he is happy in the love of God and
yet knows he is speaking a falsehood.
(B) “They are all adulterers.’’
(V. 4.) This is a terrible indictment
against that nation or those that had
turned their backs upon God and His
truth and His way. Our nation seems
to be fast hurrying on towards a sim
ilar condition. The fashionable dress
of the women is only one of the many
things that indicate the drift of our
people towards a similar condition of
affairs.
(C) Liquor drinking. (V. sto 7.)
Physical sickness and moral ruin was
the result of their liquor drinking.
The Golden Age for October 31, 1912.
By B. LA C Y HOGE, Richmond, Ya.
Liquor always ruins man, both physi
cally and morally. The liquor sellers
and the liquor drinkers are immoral.
Those who sell liquor and those who
drink it are liars. The liquor business
degrades both the seller and the user.
The best of men can be changed into
the worst by the use of liquor.
Strong drink causes most of
the crimes of our Country and never
does any good. The advocates of li
quor selling are advocates of crime.
(D) “They lie in wait for the de
struction of another.” (V. 6.) The
liquor dealer “lies in wait for the de
struction of” his fellow man. His bus
iness prospers by the destruction of
others. The man who drinks has his
passions so inflamed that he will lie
in wait to murder his fellowman or
destroy the purity of woman.
(E) “They have devoured their
judges.” (V 7). This is the spirit of
the liquor men of today. At Hills
ville, Va., a few months ago, the Al
iens, who are liquor men and engaged
in the liquor business, shot the Judge,
Sheriff, Commonwealth Attorney,
Clerk and several of the Jury that
tried and convicted old Floyd Allen.
As we write this, two of them are
serving a term in the state peniten
tiary, two have been sentenced to the
that viewpoint; for the truth which can be
proven, says, “He that ruleth his spirit is
greater than he that taketh a city.” The rul
ing of the Spirit is the keynote, and that note
is now being sounded, and at the bugle call,
all the Clubs will form into line and march on
to victory.
Our Georgia State President, Mrs. H. C.
White, of Athens, voiced the same uplifting
sentiments and declared that woman will con
tinue to have, as she has always had, burdens
relating to the home, and it is the duty of
Women’s Clubs to make the burden easier.
Fifteen thousand women in Georgia have
come to a clearer conception of the larger duties
of a progressive civilization. We have faith
in our purpose. And to this I will add that it
is the faith of the women, that “great faith”
that Jesus spoke of, that is working the revolu
tion now in progress for greater good to all
mankind.
“World Peace” was presented by the Baron
ness Von Sutter—just the same kind of peace
that was proclaimed by the angels nearly two
thousand years ago. Women must teach peace
to their husbands and their sons.
With every subject, in every detail the
Sixteenth Annual Meeting of the State Feder
ation of Women’s Clubs was by far the most
instructive and the most inspiring, giving us a
broader, a deeper, and a higher view of the
realities of life —the facts that confront us in
every walk of life. We came away feeling
more than ever that all are one.
We saw also that as one is lifted up, all are
lifted with her, and as one suffers, all must
suffer.
The Convention will also strengthen the in
visible tie that holds together the “things un
seen” —and soon the evidence will be in sight
as the culmination of the faith of Georgia’s
gracious women —the Convention which meets
every year tends to bring about and strength
en our convictions that the greatest thing in
the world is— Love —Love at Work.
Atlanta, Ga. A. G. H.
electric chair, and the other two are
on trial for their lives. This is only
one of thousands of instances of the
awful results of tie liquor business.
There is no crime that liquor will not
cause men to commit. No one has ever
been made better by selling or drinking
liquor, but millions have been corrupt
ed by its use. This being true how
can any one who professes to love
God and love the right favor the sale
of this destroyer of the character and
lives of men.
(F) The backslider is inconsistent.
(V. 8.) He “is a cake not turned.”
He is overdone on one side and raw on
the other. He believes in the strict
observance of all forms and ceremo
nies. On this side he is overdone,
but as to Christian living and gen
uine piety, he is not done. The bat
ter is not even dry. He needs turning
so the fire of God can touch the other
side.
3rd. The cure for backsliding and
for all sin and crime is return unto
the Lord with words of confession
and repentance, and He will take
away all iniquity and cleanse from all
sin and “receive us graciously.” (Ho
sea 14:1 and 2; Isa. 1:16 to 18; Prov.
28:13; John 1:7 to 9.)
