It spoke to me of Him who made Each tiny atom through all space; And while I stood in awe dismayed, I seemed to see him face to face. I saw a maiden and a man Swing idly down a meadow lane; I heard them speak, hand clasped in hand, The love that never lived in vain. I saw a babe upon the breast Os one holy crowned with motherhood, And as she crooned it into rest, She smiled as seraphs only could. Again the message came to me, Clear as the star, sweet as the bloom, Had flashed and whispered, full and free, God’s wisdom through the evening’s gloom. O, star! O, lily! man and maid!
