AN INVALID’S OUTING.
Dear Household Friends:
I have wanted for a long while to
write your page, which I love so well,
and which inspires me to better
thoughts, but constant suffering and
other things prevented. But this drear,
gray Sabbath morning I feel I can set
tle down to the pleasant task unmo
lested to tell you of my pleasant lit
tle outing in July.
A great many of you already know
of my long years of anvalidism and
inability to leave my bed, for almost
fifteen years. But recently I had
the pleasure of a visit to my brothers
and one day spent in the home of a
neighbor nearby, and it is this charm
ing home which I want to write about,
but I fear I cannot do it justice. We
started early, while the grass was
glistening with the dewy jewels, spark
ling in the sun rays. How my heart
sang a little song of rejoicing as the
horse leisurely walked along drawing
the carriage in which a party of us
were seated. None who sat by could
fancy my thoughts; none but God
knows the thoughts of those whose
lives have been crowded by pain for
dTghtteen years. But, O, the glorious
privilege of being able to be out again
inspired my heart to such thoughts
that an angel could hardly pen.
Well, we crossed a creek, high-bank
ed, over which a bridge expanded.
The roaring of a distant mill dam
greeted our hearing and soon we came
in sight of a handsome stone mill
which fronts the elegant home of our
hostess. Nestled back against a high
hill and fronting the mill and a body
of rolling water, a background of
mountains, covered with pines and the
reflection of same in the waters made
a perfect picture of loveliness that no
pen can describe. I felt I would like
to stay there always; lulled by the
ceaseless roar of the beautiful mill
dam, and sleep on the beautifully kept
mill floor, which, in its handsome
state, besides the water, is cool in the
hottest weach'er and an ideal place to
rest.
Last, but not least, the beautiful
home of the widowed mother and two
charming daughters, who constitute
the family circle, with the man em
ployed to run the business of the farm
and mill. Words fail me when I try to
express the genuine hospitality of this
home, cultured and refined, and with
a knack of knowing just how to make
an agreeable hostess. Our visit was
one never to be forgotten. City peo
ple you all know are inclined to speak
of the greenness of country people, but
it’s not true in a great many cases.
Yes, indeed as broad culture can be
found in this home as in any city home
and the table loaded with tempting
dishes, is served with as much grace
as anyone should find any where.
This ends a pleasant visit for me.
If you’ll pardon personal talk, will say,
while I am at times able by sheer
force of will-power to get out
in sweet old summer time occasion
ally, I am never free of pain; but with
my determination to keep a brave,
cheerful appearance, it’s so hard for
people to realize I am such a sufferer,
and the doctors say a hopeless case
of obstructed intestines.” Operations,
horrible in the extreme, have been
sufficiently tried, and if I am ever well
it will be by the wonderful healing
power of God. No human skill can
cure me. Yet, lam a great, large,
healthy looking woman; one day up,
the next in the awful clutch of pain till
I pray to die. But whep the awful
pain lets up for a while, though never
at ease, I feel like singing, “O, beau
tiful world, gloriously divine,” that
once seemed so void of sunshine.
Winter is fast approaching. I am
worse then and the hours and nights
seem so dreary and long. I would like
for my old-time friends to some time
think of me. Send me a thought now
and then if nothing more. I try to
keep an occupied mind when not in
bed. Both hands and mind must be
kept busy if we are happy. I do
crochetting for passtime, making baby
caps, men’s ties and find it fascinat
ing as well as earning the few pennies
to be spent at one’s own sweet will.
So, you mothers who like a beautiful
hooded child send an order for a cap
and you girls who want to remember
your sweethearts at Xmas, send for
the beautiful crochetted ties.
With much good wishes to all, I am
Sincerely,
(Miss) ANNIE PEAVY.
