America sought freedom in this domain of the West, And she laid upon the altar all of selfishness and greed, She sacrificed them nobly that her dreams might be the best, And from the truth of righteousness she built a royal creed. Our fathers thought oppression was a crime against God’s truth, Our fathers searched in agony God’s truth that they might see; Thus shattered they the shackles, and they pur posed in their youth; “America shall know the truth —the truth shall make her free.” And freedom flung her banners to the brave winds of the West, They waved to thrill and hearten all the weary of the earth; The outcast and the underling found refuge, hope and rest; The nations watched a nation spring a giant at its birth. But lately we have wandered from the royal path, and plain; A skein of lies hath caught us and we floun der in the toils; Before the lie of Mammon we have bent our backs in pain, And loathing truth, we worship at the gilded throne of spoils. ATLANTA, GA., JANUARY 9, 1913 Triumphant is the lie of Fear that panders unto Pelf, The lie of idol worship that exalts the golden calf, The lie of somber tyranny that idealizes self, The lie of trite expediency that makes a full loaf half. Forgotten is the truth of love that shields the timid weak, Brave Justice that enthrones the right for Right’s own holy sake, The truth of courage that would dare a right eous vengeance vcreak Upon the tyrant who, for power, our coun try’s power would break. Then, what is truth, my country? Let us ask it while we pray: ’Tis the answer that the conscience gives to him who seeks the light I America! but follow this —how glorious thy day! Depart from it —thy end is sure; disaster, ruin, night! 0, Giant of the early years, turn back to truth again! Shut out the blinding rays of wrong that you may clearly see; Already you are threatened, and your might and glory wane, Because you will not know the truth —truth only makes you free!
