THE CHILD IN THE MIDST
life the man who ever contends
his wisdom is a man to whom
the world never accords great
ness. This is distinctly true in
greatness. This is distinctly true in
religious life. Our Lord wants the
simple, childlike, dependable mind. In
James 1:5 we read: “If any man lack
wisdom let him ask of God, who giveth
to all men liberally, and upbraideth
not, and it shall be given him.”
Also in its naturalness. Nothing is
more natural than a child. And no
man can be truly great who is not
truly natural. Artificialism is ever
despised by the world.
Then in its dependence. No one
can look upon a child, and not be im
pressed with its dependence for every
thing that it needs. Dependence for
food, shelter, clothing. Dependence
upon its parents for learning in every
thing, —learning to walk, and talk and
care for itself, in fact, everything that
is afterwards to characterize it as man
or woman.
So it is with the man or woman who
Is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.
There is consciousness of perpetual
dependence upon God. The greater
a man becomes, the more the con
sciousness of dependence masters him.
Then in its usselfishness. No one
can fail to be impressed with the
beautiful, unselfish nature of the nor
mal child, how concerned about others’.
It is always trying to do something for
somebody else.
Now, Jesus said to these disciples,
“If you want to be great in the King
dom of Heaven, you have got to be un
selfish. If you are trying to get the
first place in the Kingdom you may
just as well quit, because you will not
get it. The greatest place goes to
the man who is not trying to get it.’’
John Ruskin, in his Modern Paint
ers, states this same truth in a most
beautiful and forceful manner. He
says: “So far as you desire to pos
sess rather than to give; so far as
you look for power to command in
stead of to bless; so far as your own
prosperity seems to grow out of con
test or rivalry of any kind with other
men and nations; so long as the hope
before you is for supremacy instead of
love, and your desire to be greatest
instead of least; first instead of last —
so long are you serving the last enemy,
death; and you shall have death’s
crown, with the worm coil in it, and
MISS CRANE’S CHANCE
(Continued from Page 3.)
“Why didn’t you give them names,”
Nell asked, as she turned a leaf, “in
keeping with their charms?”
“Oh, because they were named be
fore they came into my possession,”
Mrs. More admitted, with apparent
innocence. “Now you know that
Mary Julee Ann, is really too much of
a name for any little girl, unless she is
of royal blood —it is, in fact, a distinct
handicap.”
“I admit it,” Nell replied, as she
slipped a bon-bon into her lovely
mouth. “What is the name of the
other child?”

death’s wages, with the worm feeding
on them; kindred of the earth shall
you become, saying to the grave; thou
art my father, and to the worm, thou
art my mother and my sister.”
Finally, in its trust. This brings
us to the climax, for the most beau
tiful thing about the life of a child
is its rustfulness. Chrysostom,
speaking of the child, says “The most
striking think about a child is its
trust. You may show him a queen
with a crown, but he will prefer his
mother, though she be clothed in
rags. It can never see anything
wrong in those it loves.’’ I remem
ber very well when I was a child, I
used to have a frightful dream every
now and then. Some people called it
a nightmare. How frightened I
would get. Finally, they put me along
side of my mother’s bed in a small bed.
And when I was almost a young man
I slept by my mother’s bed in that
way, and for the purpose of having
her reach her hand out, and touch
me when I had that dream. The
touch would drive away all the night
mares. Beautiful, sweet, trustful con
fidence. Just to know that she was
near, nothing could harm me, awake
or asleep.
Now, Jesus said to His disciples:
“If you would be greatest in the King
dom of Heaven, you must become
like this little child, in its trustfulness.
Let trust and confidence in God be
the ruling principle of your life.’’
May we all learn the lesson and en
deavor to practice it, remembering
that though we may not get our re
ward here, that we will get it here
after.
Practical Points.
1. Jesus is the model teacher.
2. The peril of ambition is the
gratification of self. Do not let any
body tell you that it is a perilous thing
to have ambition. It depends on
whether there is a selfish motive in it
or not.
3. The test of greatness is the use
of simplicity. I do not mean now,
that everybody that is simple is great.
Some people are simple fools. Real
greatness is always simple.
4. The hope of the Church is the
discovery of the child. By the help of
God we are going to find and care for
the child in modern life. We are go
ing to see that it has a chance.
5. The better we serve the chil
dren the faster we build the Kingdom.
“Matilda Ophelia Jane,” Mrs. More
answered solemnly, as she dropped
her embroidery in her lap, and cross
ed her hands over it. “But 1
might as well confess, Nell,” she con
tinued, with a tender glow in her eyes,
“that I have abbreviated their names
to simply Julia and Phelia, respective
ly. I have to foot all their bills, and
that gives me, you Know, the commer
cial right of dictation. I have invited
the little girls over to luncheon to
morrow, so that Gordon may inspect
at his leisure, our new family jewels.”
“Where do they live?” Nell inquir
ed.
“Oh, I board them down on the South
Side,” Gertrude admitted, with a gay
little laugh, “with a woman who hap
pens to be their real mother.”
“I understand, Gertrude,” Nell said,
dreamily. But, Mrs. More thought to
herself that as Nell had never heard
that she had invested six thousand

The Best Cough Syrup is
Easily Made at Home
Costs Little and Acts Quickly,
Money Refunded If It Falls.
This recipe makes a pint of cough
syrup, and saves you about $2.00 as com
pared with ordinary cough remedies. It
stops obstinate coughs—even whooping
cough—in a hurry, and is splendid for
sore lungs, asthma, croup, hoarseness
and other throat troubles.
Mix one pint of granulated sugar with
% pint of warm water, and stir for 2
minutes. Put 2% ounces of Pinex (fifty
cents’ worth) in a pint bottle, and add
the Sugar Syrup. Take a teaspoonful
every one, two or three hours. Tastes
good.
This takes right hold of a cough and
gives almost instant relief. It stimu
lates the appetite, and is slightly laxa
tive —both excellent features.
Pinex, as perhaps you know, is the
most valuable concentrated compound of
Norway white pine extract, rich in
guaiacol and the other natural healing
pine elements.
No other preparation will do the work
of Pinex in this recipe, although strained
honey can be used instead of the sugar
syrup, if desired.
Thousands of housewives in the United
States and Canada now use this Pinex
and Sugar Syrup recipe. This plan has
often been imitated, but the old success
ful formula has never been equaled. Its
low cost and quick results have made it
immensely popular.
A guaranty of absolute satisfaction, or
money promptly refunded, goes with this
recipe. Your druggist has Pinex, or will
get it for you. If not, send to The
