BROUGHTON AND MORGAN COMING.
All over the South and even beyond, it will
be good news that Dr. Len G. Broughton, of
London, founder of The Tabernacle Bible Con
ference, will be in Atlanta to direct
the greater “Atlanta Bible Confer
ence,” March 7-17. While there will be other
notable speakers, chief interest centers in the
fact that Dr. Broughton will bring with him
G. Campbell Morgan, who has always been the
greatest magnet of these great gatherings.
Genial Secretary J. W. Ham is on the ground
and will make fuller announcement soon

BIRMINGHAM’S BRILLIANT “BOOZE
BUSTER.”
Only last week we made editorial reference
to Judge Horace C. Wilkinson, the eloquent
young lawyer of Birmingham, who

Fight refreshing thing to see a young man
Along! of brilliant parts shrine his all on the
altar of conscience, and some day the
best people of Alabama will crown Wilkinson
like they are crowning Hobson, and will crown
him yet more.
In a personal letter received from Judge Wil
kinson there is so much that is good concerning
the cause of prohibition and good government
that the Editor is glad to share it with the
readers of The Golden Age. In the course of
his letter Judge Wilkinson says:
“Birmingham is progressing so beautifully
(?) under the ‘well regulated’ saloon, that the
great mass of voters are in favor of returning
to prohibition and its ‘ALLEGED blind tigers’
In fact, so strong has this sentiment grown,
that now through the medium of the daily
press, as you have perhaps already noted, the
Anti-Governor of Alabama is attempting to
obtain an agreement from the prohibitionists,
that they will make no attempt to repeal the
liquor laws, in the event he calls an extra ses
sion of the Legislature. lam of the opinion
that one more breeze from the ‘Georgia Cy
clone’ around these ‘diggins’, would ‘start
some thing’ that would be hard to stop, this
side of a dry state.
“lam now looking forward with pleasure to
the next campaign for a dry state and county,
when, I am sure we will be honored with your
presence. Your delightful paper will be of
great assistance to all prohis’, and should be
in the hands of every lover of good government
and ‘dry territory.’ Keep the good work up,
and as has been said before, ‘May you and
yours, and your fearless paper live long and
prosper.’
“Cordially your friend,
“HORACE C. WILKINSON.”
Editorial P. S. —Certainly, the Editor of this
paper is very much ready for coming Ala

speeches “moving around in his system”—new
arguments and new stories that have “grown
up” since the last Birmingham campaign.

Os course, we knew it all the time, but it is
horribly reassuring to have the confession
made from papal headquarters.

women might worship God ac
cording to their pleasure, or not worship Him
at all, as they might elect —in other words, the
blood of patriots and heroes brought the priv
ilege of absolute religious freedom, but that
blood did not buy the right of one religion to
dominate politically, the life of the nation that
gave it its spiritual freedom.
We have maintained also that in the crux
of the decision many patriotic Americans, who
are Catholics religiously, would part company
with Rome if Rome were to use her religious
freedom to demand political supremacy.
The average Catholic, schooled in the free
dom of United States liberty, and American
ideals, will answer a vehement, indeed an hon
est “No!” if you make the charge of the politi
cal designs of Rome; but the proof is sadly in
hand.
In The Protestant Magazine for January
(published in Washington, D. C.) appears a
letter from Archbishop Bonzano, which “shells
down the corn.” We give his letter to Thos.
J. Carey, of Palestine, Texas, together with
the comment of The Protestant Magazine:

June 16, 1912.
Mr. Thos. J. Carey, 285 Cottage Ave., Palestine,
Texas.
Dear Sir:
In your letter to me, dated June 10th, you
say that the religious future of yourself, your
wife and children is the most serious and im
portant thing of all. Now, you must remem
ber that if the Catholic Church condemns doc
trines that are pernicious to the good of the
faithful, she does it only in order to defend and
protect the religion of her children. Hence,
you should submit to the decisions of the Church
even at the cost of sacrificing political princi
ples. For your guidance I may mention to
you the fact that Socialism, besides being a po
litical party, is also an anti-Christian sect. In
order to convince yourself of this you have only
to read what Socialism teaches regarding re
ligion.
With best wishes I am,
Yours sincerely,
X JOHN BONZANO,
Archbishop of Melitene.
Apostolic Delegate.
A Remarkable Letter from Archbishop Bonzano

“In the report of the Convention last
week the types made an amusing blunder.
Where we said ‘Columbia College is the

Priestly Confession of Romish Tyranny
Archbishop Bonzano, of Washington, the papal
delegate, Mr. Thomas J. Carey, of Palestine,
Texas, asked this question: ‘ Must las a Cath
olic, surrender my political freedom to the
Church? . . . By this I mean the right to vote
for the Democratic, Socialist, or Republican
party when and where I please.’ A' photo
graphic reproduction of the reply is printed
above. This letter from the highest represent
ative of the Pope in America brands as false
every declaration by any Roman Catholic that
the Pope is merely a spiritual sovereign and
claims no jurisdiction in political matters. It
also takes from every Roman Catholic in the
United States his political freedom, and asserts
the right of the hierarchy to control the Cath
olic vote. This official declaration on the part
of the Papacy strikes at the very foundation of
a republican form of government, and shows
that the triumph of papal principles in America
means the death of political freedom. All citi
zens, irrespective of creed or political party,
ought to make such a protest against the papal
program “to make America Catholic” as would
be heard from one end of the country to the
other. This document is the signal for united
action.”
This letter of the Pope’s representative in
America, and the trumpet call of The Protest
ant Magazine, ought to be given the wings of
the morning in order that every American pa
triot, whether Protestant or Catholic, may have
his eyes opened to the actual facts —for these
facts are a menace to American liberty and free
institutions everywhere.
In vain does Archbishop Bonzano shift the
responsibility by his special attack on Social
ism. We are all opposed to that godless type
of Socialism which fights Churches in particu
lar, and Christianity in general. There are
many Christian Socialists who do not fight the
Churches. But that is sidestepping the ques
tion. That is throwing Socialistic sand in the
eyes of anti-Socialists in order to curry favor
for meddlesome Rome. Forget not that he
says: “You must remember that if the Cath
olic Church condemns doctrines that are perni
cious to the good of the faithful, she does it
only in order to defend and protect the religion
of her children. Hence you should submit to
the decisions of the Church even at the cost of
sacrificing your political principles.”
Ordinarily, any of us would say that a man
should stand by his religion above everything—•
even going to the stake, if necessary, to prove
that loyalty. But, when Rome demands the
right to control in politics and coerce con
science, as she has always done where she had
the power, the hideous horrors of Italy, France
and Spain rise in blighting blackness before
us, and we cry aloud: Freedom of conscience
in spiritual things for Rome, but Romish polit
ical dominion no more forever!
Convention.’ But Columbia College is
certainly the ‘Pet and the Pride’ of our
people, and so stands at the head of the
class, not at the foot.”
Amen! Os course concerning Columbia Col
lege—that superb and growing institution
hut our special point is that “there are oth
ers” who have a hard time with the “printers’
devil,” or the proof reader, besides the Editor
of The Golden Age.
It may not be very commendable, but, ver
ily, editorial misery loves company. Selah!
