MRS. LEM GILREATH TELLS OF
W. C. T. U. WORK.
Editor Golden Age:
Christmas, with the sweet, stay-at
home days, has come and gone, and
again we are out, whirling from place
to place, over the State, in this, our
own God-given work for the Georgia
W. C. T. U.
First, there was Griffin, where we
were entertained in the homes with
our noble State President, Mrs. T. E.
Patterson. How we enpjoyed that
visit to Griffin! The wide-awake wom
en, the intense earnestness of that
Union, and the interest they are man
ifesting in ways and means by which
they are going to get rid of those
near-beer saloons. I would like to
whisper to those saloon men to watch
out —they are going to have to find
some other business one of these days.
Before 750 Students of Gordon.
Next there were four days in that
fine educational center, Barnesville.
How these women did open their
hearts and houses and take us in, and
we were overwhelmed with the gigan
tic responsibility as we stood in that
tremendous auditorium and talked to
750 students in Gordon Institute.
Mrs. Armor Stirs Macon.
Here Mrs. Patterson joined us, and
we started our institute work in Ma
con.
Mrs. Armor, wonderful Mrs. Armor,
was with us in Macon, and she was
never more at her best. For an hour
and a half she stood before those peo
ple Monday night, January 19th, and
told us wonderful temperance truths.
She said this to us privately, and we
pass it on, and stress it: “Pray that
God may restore my voice, my throat
is in a very serious condition.” Will
you, White Ribboners, all over the na
tion, join us in this prayer?
THE CALL OF ABRAM.
February 16th, 1913.
Time—2l26 B. C.
Gen. 12:1 to 9.
Places —Haran, Shechem and Bethel.
THE GOLDEN TEXT: “I will bless
thee, and make thy name great; and
thou shalt be a blessing.” Gen. 12:2.
SUGGESTIVE THOUGHTS.
What should I do?
I.—Go when God calls. Vs. Ito 3.
When the call first came to Abram
he was in Mesopotamia. (Acts. 7:2
to 4.) He promptly obeyed the call,
but not fully. God had said to him:
Ist. Get out of thy country. (V. 1.)
This he obeyed.
2nd. Leave thy kindred and thy
father’s house. (V. 1.) This he did
not obey. He took with him his fath
er and his nephew, Lot. His father
and his kindred were idolatrous, there
fore God called him to leave them.
(Josh. 24:2; Gen. 31:-9 and 20.) Ev
ery child of God is called to separa
tion. (II Cor. 6:17 and 18.) The call
comes to many now to leave their
country, their father’s house and their
kindred. When the call comes, there
must be full obedience, if wo wjsh to
SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON

In Beautiful Savannah.
On Wednesday, January 21st, we
left Macon for Savannah, beautiful,
beautiful Savannah, the wonderful
Southern city, where you are impress
ed that there is plenty of grandeur
on the face of the earth, enough for
business, enough for beauty, enough
for pleasure! The live oaks, green as
mid-summer, hung with the sombre
moss, lifted their queenly heads in the
great parks, at every turn. The
gleaming statuary, and beautiful build
ings, all make pictures indelibly im
pressed on our minds.
Our institute was held in our head
quarters 118 Oglethorpe avenue, and
was well attended, and some of the
most prominent ministers of the city
were with us, and talked for us. Not
able among these was Dr. W. L. Pick
ard, of the First Baptist Church. I
will never forget two things Dr. Pick
ard said in his wonderful talk. He
said: “Sisters, I think the time has
come when we should quit asking God
for women to make homes in the
world for Him, ask Him for a world
they can make homes in ” Again, he
said: “Aim high, live on the moun
tain top if you live there alone! Be
sure the glory of God will, sooner or
later, shine out through you, and win
some one up there beside you.”
Saturday is our rest day, and on
that day I went out to Tybee and sat
be right with God. (Matt. 10:37; Luke
14:33.)
3rd. Go to “the land that I will
show thee.’' (V. 1.) Abram did not
obey this at once. He stopped at
Haran. It took the death of his fath
er to get him out of Haran (Acts 7:4.)
Abram has many followers today.
They leave Mesopotamia, but they will
not go into Canaan. They stop at
Haran and there remain until driven
out by affliction. To be right' with
God, and get the blessing promised,
we must fully obey God. I must
leave my present surroundings and
seek those God has chosen for me. I
must abandon my old position, give
up my old companions and all other
things that would hinder my doing
God’s will, and “go where He wants
me to go. Do what He wants me
to do. Say what He wants me to
say. And be what He wants me to
be.” God is still calling men, some
into the ministry of His word at
home, and some to go to the foreign
field, and others to make money and
use it to enable those called to the
ministry of the Word to give their
time and attention to "the work where
unto He has called them." (Acta 13:
1 and 2; JI. Cor. 8:4 to 9; If. Cor. 9:1
to 7; 10'U and 15J

all day and watched the waves roll in,
and break in spray at my feet, and
my mind was full of that passage of
Scripture where we are told: “The
earth shall be filled with the knowl
edge of the glory of God, as the waters
cover the sea.” Then I thought of the
song the matchless Mercer quartette
sang to us last Wednesday night, “Can
His Kingdom Come to a Land Soaked
With rum?” and we lifted up our
hearts in prayer that a time might
come, speedily, when a wave of His
love and His power might sweep over
this land and wash forever from its
shores the awful, blighting curse of
rum.
Today we are in Waycross begin
ning our work here among the hospit
able, genial people of this beautiful
little Southern city, a great prohibi
tion stronghold.
Our State President,-Mrs. Patterson,
is doing much in these institutes.
Thoroughly informed in this great
work, she stands, day after day, be
fore the people and teaches them, and
at night she lectures on the great
evil, and God is blessing and using
this rare woman.
I am proud of our State President,
and lam more than proud of her. I
lovelier “with a love sincere.” Pray
for her, please, and when you are
talking to our heavenly Father about
her, will you not remember also the
II. —Go into Canaan. Vs. 4 to 6.
Abram was an old man when he left
Haran to undertake a new work. God
often, calls old men to new service.
So long as we live, God has a place
for us and a work for us to do. Old
men are often laid on the shelf, be
cause they will not obey God and ad
vance or undertake new things and
new service. Lot with Abram
and not with God. They came into
the land of Canaan. No man ever
tried and failed to reach the land and
the place to which God called him.
Abram took all he had with him,
there was nothing left to draw him
back to his old country and to the old
life. Canaan is a type of the life into
which we are called by Christ. A
life, where we can enjoy fellowship
with the Lord, have power in prayer
and be greatly used of God. To enter
this land we must take all that we
have. We must not leave anything
behind to draw us back into the old
life. When we go into Canaan, like
Abram, we can take some Lot with
us, who would not be strong enough
to go alone. Abram found diffi
culties in the way of possessing the
land. “The Canaanite was there in
the land.” The giants are in the land
to wNch God c|ll| us. (Epl). 5:1? R.

A REMARKABLE SPRING.
Located in the heart of the mineral belt of
Piedmont South Carolina at Shelton, and
issuing trom a granite iissure is one of Na
ture’s blessings to mankind —Shivar Mineral
Spring. Analysis shows this water to contain
medicinal properties of the highest quality, in
unusual quantities. Hundreds of gallons
daily leave this spring to physicians and
others on missions of relief in cases of stom
ach, liver, bowel and kidney disorders like in
digestion, constipation, rheumatism, gall
stones, uric acid poisoning, etc., which dis
eases it relieves and cures with wonderful
success. Mr. N. F. Shivar, owner, makes
the following offer to sufferers: Deposit $2
and he will ship 10 gallons of the water
with the understanding that it is to bene
fit you or your money back on receipt of
empty bottles. Mr. John P. Rhodes, Lynch
burg, Va., writes: —“I enclose money order
for $2. Please send me 10 gallons of water
quickly. I want it for rheumatism. I
know several who were cured of rheumatism
with this water. Address N. F. Shivar, Shi
var Spring, Shelton, S. 0.
V.) No matter what the difficulties
in the way, we can enter the land
and dwell there. For God calls us
and He will give all needed poweh to
enable us to obey the call.
111. —Build an Altar unto the Lord.
Vs. 7 to 9.
As soon as Abram entered the land
of Canaan, God appeared unto him,
and said, “Unto thy seed will I give
this land.” When we obey the Lord
and enter the land God will appear
unto us and manifest himself unto us.
(John 14:21 to 23.) Abram “builded
an altar unto the Lord.” We never
read of an altar at Haran or of
Abram’s “calling upon the name of the
Lord” while at Haran. Haran Chris
tians never have an altar. They do
not call upon the name of the Lord,
except in time of trouble or need. The
man in Canaan has his altar where
he holds communion with God, praises
Him for the blessings received, as well
as asking that his needs be supplied
IV. —Be a Blessing. Vs. 2 and 3.
God blessed Abram that he might
be a blessing to others. God does not
give blessings for us to enjoy them
alone. He wants us to pass them on.
As God has blessed you, pass it on
to another, and He will multiply thy
blessing,
