AMERICANS ARE RE-MAKING
TURKEY.

thousand of whom are in the five col
leges in which American professors
are training men and women to face
and solve the problems of the world in
the true American spirit. It is not
too much to say that the only infusion
of the ideas of Western civilization
into these Eastern races has come not
from Great Britain or-Germany, but
from America.
The American colleges are all reli
gious institutions; but no attempt is
made to proselytize; and as W. E.
Curtis said in his interesting
book, “Around the Black Sea,”
representatives of fifteen races
and five religions, regularly at
tend service at Roberts College. The
Jewish and Moslem students are often
among the most punctual in their at
tendance at these Christian prayers.
An illuminating little anecdote illus
trates the influence of American
thought upon the Eastern mind. When
I was a boy, Jacob Abbott’s books
were among the treasures of our libra
ry. Nowadays I do not know any
one who reads “Beechnut,” “Stuyve
sant,” and the other stories of my boy
hood. Indeed, I had myself almost
forgotten Jacob Abbott’s name when
suddenly I was startled by hearing
from Sir W. Ramsey that my friend,
Halideh Hanum, had translated Jacob
Abbott’s book, “The Mother in the
Home,” into Turkish for the instruc
tion of Turkish mothers. Still more
startling, Halideh Hanum was actually
decorated by the ex-Sultan, Abdul Ha
mid, for her services to the women of
his empire in translating Abbott’s
book.

schools have played a great part in
the national awakening among the
Armenians. If there had only been
more American schools in Albania
and Macedonia, the solution of the
most difficult problem in the East of
Europe would not appear so hopeless
as it is" today. But it is especially
as regards the education of women
that the future is most hopeful and
yet most tragic.
It is a terrible thing to think of
these hundreds of talented, ambitious
young women fully charged with
American ideas turned loose in the
midst of a community in which to
wear a European dress or to go into
the city unveiled consigns a Turkish
woman to a police-station at once, even
under the regime of the Young Turks.
To pour such strong new wine into
such very old bottles is certain to pro
duce commotion! it may produce con
vulsion. But although individuals
may suffer, the general result will be
wholly good.
It is even yet a mooted point with
many Turks whether women have
souls at all. The learned mollah de
clared that if a woman is absolutely
obedient to her husband, never
thwarts him in any particular, and al
ways ministers to all his wants, she
may perhaps get into paradise by hold
ing to the tail of the ass on which her
lord and master rides through the
gates. But even this modified recog
nition of the fact that certain women
may have souls is regarded as hereti
cal in some quarters. In a society
reared on such notions an American
college-reared woman must be like a
dyanmite bomb in petticoats.
