’Twas but a timid violet
Half-hidden in the snow;
It peeped from out the stainless rift
To meet the sun’s soft glow.
And seeing it, there came to me
A memory of old
When she was but a lassie wee,
And I a lover bold.
Her eyes were like the star’s clear
light
That at the twilight glows,
Her look as full of rueless peace
As was the evening’s close.
Her cheeks were touched with color
rich
As mantles o’er the rose
That climbs the first bare hedge of
spring,
Don’t you think it is about time I
was slipping in for a chat with my
boys and girls? I do, at least, for I
feel a bit like I had been off for a
visit of several weeks. But I have
been finding so many good things that
other people had said in so much
better way than I could say them, that
I couldn’t help letting you enjoy them
with me.
Now, I want to tell you briefly about
the delightful valentine party our G.
M. A. Baracas had over at the Y.
M. C. A. parlors, on the campus of the
Georgia Military Academy last Satur
day night. It was one of those short
notice parties that seem always the
more enjoyable because of a lack of
long anticipation.
A “bunch” of the faithfuls together
with the sponsor, met me at the par
lors Friday night, and we had no end
of real fun decorating with scores of
hearts, cupids and arrows, the details
of which would take too long to tell
you about, but the strongest features
of which were portieres of hearts in
the double door-ways and a fresco of
hearts and cupids artistically attached
to white crepe paper edged with fes
toons of the same in red.
A lace-draped and heart-bedecked
alcove in the reception hall, furnished
the post office at which were posted
comics from the girls, for the boys and
fancy valentines for the girls from the
boys, as a starting point. And it
proved quite a “mixing” feature; creat
ing no end of merriment. Mrs. Bay
nard Willingham, who, together, with
OLD LADY’S SAGE ADVICE.
Knoxville, Tenn. —Mrs. Mamie Towe,
of 102 W. Main street, this city, says:
“If you had seen me, before I began to
take Cardui, you would not think I was
the same person. Six doctors failed
to do me good, and my friends thought
I would die. I could hardly get out of
bed or walk a step. At last an old
lady advised me to take Cardui, and
now I can go most anywhere.” All
ailing women need Cardui, as a gentle,
refreshing tonic, especially adapted to
their peculiar ailments. It is a relia
ble, vegetable remedy, successfully
used for over 50 years. You ought to
try it

A Violet lu the Snow
[By ARTHUR GOODENOUGH.
Flame-smitten where it blows.
Her’s was the sweet, elusive grace,
The magic, of this flower
That leans its soft cheek on the snow
And lives a faultless hour.
And dreaming of her as she sleeps
Out where the violets grow,
I hold this picture faithfully
Os her I meet no more:
She was a timid violet
Half-hidden in the snow.
The spirit of her lives with me
Wherever I shall go.
Lives with me as the violet’s breath
Embalms with rare perfume
The memory of her innocence
Sweet-lingering round her tomb.
CHAT
Mrs. A. I. Madden, assisted in receiv
ing, presided, as post mistress and
was empowered with authority to read
aloud each “sarcastic comic,” or love
laden messenger before the name was
called.
As the post office closed business
for the evening, old-time, lace-trimmed
valentines, on which the name of a
boy had been written, were passed to
the girls and each presenting her val
entine to the boy addressed got her
partner for the next game, and also
the dining room where, amid an ar
ray of ferns and valentine emblems a
delicious fruit punch was being served
by Miss Louise Madden, in a lovely
costume of white embroidered chiffon,
over white charmeuse, and Miss Ethel
Stewart, of Decatur, in a soft clinging
drapery of red silk mull, their cos
tumes carrying out the color scheme
of red and white, which are also G. M.
A. colors.
The game following this, that was
entered into with hearty enthusiasm,
was played by each couple taking their
turn at throwing three times each
with a soft rubber ball, at a cluster
of small red hearts pasted on to a
large white one and numbered up to
twenty-five, the sum of the numbers
hit forming their score and the high
est score naming the winners.
The closing game of the evening was
one in which the players at four tables
were furnished with cards, on each of
which one word of a verse was writ
ten, and beginning with the holder of
the figure incorporated in the verse,
each player bid as in authors until the
verse was complete. The full copy be
ing given on a large heart in the cen
ter of the table, where also stood a pot
of ferns, brightened by one of those
beautiful valentine creations that open
up and make a “life-like” cluster of
flowers.
The sponsor of the class, Miss Wini
fred Youmans, assisted by the Misses
Sallie and Ethel Stewart, all wearing
dainty dresses of red, then served the
jolly “valentiners” with delectable re
freshments, carrying out the color
scheme —and a more reluctant crowd I
never saw pushed into good-byes by
the chime of the midnight hour.
I wish all of my boys and girls
could have enjoyed this with us.
