Now, listen! Here is the sentence,
“And now art thou cursed from the
earth which hath opened its mouth
to receive thy brother’s blood from
thy hand; when thou tillest the ground
it shall not henceforth yield unto thee
its strength; a fugutive and a wan
derer shalt thou be in the earth.”
And now listen to Cain’s response,
“My punishment is greater than I can
bear. Behold Thou hast driven me
out this day from the face of the
ground; and from Thy face shall I be
hid; and I shall be a fugutive and a
wanderer in the earth.”
The Failure of Freedom.
Thus we have the record of man’s
second failure; which was also the
failure of freedom, for there was no
law of restraint at that time, and man
was allowed to do as he pleased; not
even was punishment for murder al
lowed.
Alas! what a sad commentary upon
the present-day propaganda of an
archy, which is life, without law.
But this record of failure is not yet
finished, for we see now a new move
‘ ment in the history of the race, in the
birth of Seth. Seth came, therefore,
to take Abel’s place in the line of the
family. His name meant “appointed.”
At his birth Eve said “God hath ap
pointed me another instead of Abel,
whom Cain slew.” Observe here, Eve
uses the word “Elohim,” the God of
creation, instead of “Jehovah,” the
God of Covenant. It would seem from
this that she had lost her faith,
through the conduct of Cain. We must
remember that she had been expect
ing the promised seed, and had seen
the failure of Cain; hence she had
doubtless lost her faith in the cove
nant of God.
The birth of Seth begins a twofold
progress of the race, the Canaanites;
on the one hand, and the Sethites on
the other hand.
The Final Movement.
Take the Canaanites. What did
they do? First, they built cities, then
they invented machinery, composed,
music and made musical instruments..
In all this they were trying to reform
and improve the world, without deal
ing with sin and God. If we follow"
along the generations until we come'
to Lamech, the fifth from Cain, what
do we find?
Lamech introduced polygamy; he
worshipped the God of force, and
was an idolater; finally committing

Man’s Second Chance
(Continued from Page Two.)
murder!
Here is what we find with no God,
and no dealing with the sin problem.
Take the Sethites, the successors
to Abel. What did they do? They
built no cities; they invented no arts;
they devised no amusements; they
had no share in what is called world
progress. They kept, however, the
curse of God upon the race in mind,
and constantly worshipped and offered
sacrifices to Jehovah the Covenant
God.
Murderous Cain tries to reform the
curse without God, and his family
comes - to shame and disgrace, with
murder in Lamech, the seventh from
Adam!
Worshipping Seth continues to con
fess his weakness, offering sacrifices
and calling upon Jehovah, the Cove
nant God, and he triumphs in the
translation of Enoch, the seventh
from Adam!
What a lesson to the world at the
present time!
Cain stands for the type of man,
honest and sincere, who is trying to
better the condition of humanity by
relying on the arm of flesh. He real
izes thaf is down, and he thinks
he can lift him up by resorting to
human instrumentalities, all of them
good as far as they go, but they do
not, and can not go far enough. Man
is first of all a sinner-alienated from
God; and no human means can ever
lift him up and keep him there. We
must realize that man is down and he
can not be lifted up save as he is lift
ed from within, and no means can
lift him from within save God. This is
work for God to do. We may talk as
much as we like about the redemp
tion of society, but society can never
be redeemed until men are brought,
through the atoning merit of Jesus
Christ into fellowship with God.
And so, patiently working, waiting,
praying, hoping, the Church, like Seth,
goes, and the world around fails to
see that it is making progress and tak
ing a conspicuous part in the affairs
■of the world, but it moves on and on,
as a silent force, until at last in the
economy of God there is to be a bles
sed translation —thatis the Church!

Thou shalt not drudge like a gal

Thou shalt not übe thy next-door

Thou shalt not forget that though
man is made in his Maker’s image, yet
a wholly different mold was used for

There is no authentic record of any

Though the age-crumbled adage

marital happiness is never permanent

It is never too late to lose it by a

How to Have the Best Cough
Syrup and Save $2, by
Making It at Home.
Cough medicines, as a rule, contain a
large quantity of plain syrup. If you
take one pint of granulated sugar, add
% pint of warm water and stir about
2 minutes, you have as good syrup as
money could buy.
If you will then put ounces of
Pinex (50 cents’ worth) in a pint bottle,
and fill it up with the Sugar Syrup, you
will have as much cough syrup as you
could buy ready made for $2.50. It
keeps perfectly/
And you will find it the best cough
syrup you ever used—even in whooping
cough. You can feel it take hold —usu-
ally stops the most severe cough in 24
hours. It is just laxative enough, has a
sood tonic effect, and taste is pleasant.
'ake a teaspoonful every one, two or
three hours.
It is a splendid remedy, too, for
whooping cough, croup, hoarseness, asth
ma, chest pains, etc.
Pinex is the most valuable concentra
ted compound of Norway white pine ex
tract, rich in guaiacol and all the heal
ing pine elements. No other prepara
tion will work in this formula.
This recipe for making cough remedy
with Pinex and Sugar Syrup is now
used and prized in thousands of homes
in the United States and Canada. The
plan has often been imitated but never
successfully.
A guaranty of absolute satisfaction, or
money promptly refunded, goes with this
recipe. Your druggist has Pinex, or will
get it for you. If not, send to The
Pinex Co., Ft. Wayne, Ind.
