My friend told her she had a live

childish things and care for her little

grief to her according to the way she
brought it up. She did not seem much
impressed, and said babies were a

THAT MONSTER OF THE DEEP.
I am sure all of you have read about
that marvelous sea creature that was
caught off the East Coast of Florida
near Knights Key last June. But per
haps you did not believe what you
read, and said with a smile, “Another
sea serpent story,” but I assure you
this is no “fish story.” It is an im
mense reality. Nothing like it has
ever been seen before. The scientists
at the Smithsonian Institute, to whom
a minute description and picture were
sent —declare that even its species
is unknown.
It weighs thirty thousand pounds, is
forty-five feet long and over eight feet
in diameter. Its fins are five (feet
long and three feet wide. It has no
scales, but the hide is three inches
thick. Its mouth is thirty-eight inches
wide and forty-four deep, and it has
several thousand teeth. In its stom
ach was an animal it had swallowed
which weighed 1,500 pounds.
It was captured only after a long
and desperate fight lasting over 39
hours. It smashed and knocked the
rudder and propeller off of a thirty
one-ton yacht. Five harpoons and one
hundred and fifty bullets were re
quired to subdue it, but it took five
days to finally kill it. It had to be
towed 110 miles by a tug.
Its capture was a thrilling and per
ilous experience and required courage
and hard work, but it will bring its
captors a fortune. They are now car
rying it up Indian River in a specially
built boat and exhibiting it at the dif
ferent larger towns on the river.
People flock to see it.
Five hundred persons witnessed the
finish of its fight for life, and five
thousand saw the monster dragged on
the steamship ways at Miami.
All of us went to see it here when
the vessel conveying it on its way to
Washington City and Smithsonian In
stitute stopped at Cocoa and Rock
ledge. It was certainly worth seeing.
Sister Freddie and I could both have
sat in its enormous mouth. It must
have been a fish of this kind that
swallowed Jonah. (He would have
been a mere tid-bit to a fish that swal-

lowed a fifteen hundred-pound animal.
In our little town —though the tour
ists are nearly all gone, the exhibit of
the monster fish brought a hundred
and fifty dollars in the one day the
vessel was here. It was surely worth
seeing—beat all the moving picture
shows. Who would have dreamed
that such an immense creature lurked
under the placid waters crossed by
Mr. Flagler’s wonderful extension rail
road across the sea? Knight’s Key,
near which it was found, is one of the
islands over which the railroad passes.
There is a perfect necklace of these
islands around Florida’s peninsular.
Once before an immense whale was
thrown up on the shore of Indian riv
er, and there are a good many mana
tees (sea cows) in the river. They
are huge creatures but not immense
and marvelous like this great fish.

THE CHILD THAT TEASES.
Some time ago a mother asked in
the Household what should be done
about two boys, who have an incor
rigible habit of teasing their sisters
and younger brothers. I had the same
trouble with two of my children and
I met it by inducing the others (I have
eight children) never to get angry
or resent the teasing, but enter into
it good-naturedly, as if it were a game
and try to give it back to them.
I never scold the young teasers,
but try to turn all into a joke, while
privately I tell them it is not kind or
well bred to annoy their brothers and
sisters. My children all help me with
the work about the house and garden
and poultry yard. I taught them when
they were very small that this was
right and their duty and they perform
their tasks cheerfully, often having
“fun” with it as they work.

cry unto Almighty God as the woman

on me, O Lord, thou son of David;

but maybe too late.
If, through God’s miraculous grace
we should be permitted ti enter the
