Far away in a beautiful vallew
W.t hthe hills rising up on each side
Is heard the glad noise of the waters —
The voice which forever doth ride
On the winds of the bright early morn
ing,
On the breeze of the soft even-tide.
O come, let us view the great wonder
Which Nature hath wrought with
her hand
Whose matchless and ever fresh beau,
ty
Gives brightness and life to the land.
Which tells us of man’s own weak na
ture,
Os the future beyond great and
grand.
The Cascata’s roaring grows louder
As nearer its site we advance,
Till suddenly through the green foli
age
It first meets our quick, eager glance.
Astep more and there is unfolded
Its joyous and mad downward dance.
From the dark line of green far above
us,
Blending with the blue sky of heav
en,
The torrent leaps forth bright and
sparkling
As if by some mighty force driven
And breaks on the stern rocks be
neath it
In foaming white jets swiftly driven.
And sparkling and gurgling and danc
ing
It leaps in its mad downward flight!
And whirling and laughing and glanc
ing
Caressing the rocks in their might
'Reflecting the sun’s rays from heaven
In flashes of swift passing light.
Each drop as it strikes on the granite
Seems to laugh as it leaps on its way
And joining in play with its brothers
Forms in eddies and dashes of spray
An dtheir voices all mingling together
Makes the roar heard by night and
by day.

But the thoughts which it brings are
not only
Those of pleasure through ear and
through eye,
Os the sweet fleeting joys of the pres
ent
Which will flee wis the last sad
good-bye;
To be treasured in memory only
To return with a tear or a sigh!
For banished are thoughts of the
morrow
And gone are the small cares of life!
Its smiles and its tears are forgotten
The heart-aches with which it is rife
We soar from our joys and our sor
rows
To regions which know not of strife!
The hills which rise grandly above us
Clothed in dark and perennial green
Speaks to us of the great God of
Nature —
Here the touch of His finger is seen.
And the voice of the Cascata rising
Seems in joy to praising His name.
Back, back through the vista of ages
Our thoughts on it swings we may
bear;
But the mountains still rise in their
grandeur
And the Cascata’s voice is still there.
The green is still seen on the hill-side
And the sun still sends forth its
bright glare.
The tall stately trees of tke forest
And the beasts which beneath them
did roam
In myriads have grown to perfection
And entered their last silent home.
But not once in all the bright ages
Has the Cascata’s voice ceased to
moan!
An dwe who stand here at thy waters
With the bright smile of joy on each
face
Will enter the shadows eternal
And others in turn take our place;
But still will thy current roll onward,
And stil o’er the rocks madly race!

WHY SHOULD HE.
For three solid hours the captain
had been lecturing his men on “the
duties of a soldier,” and he thought
it was time to see how much they had
understood of his discourse. Casting
his eyes round the room he fixed on
Private Murphy as his first victim.
“Private Murphy,” he asked, “why
should a soldier be ready to die for
his country?”
Private Murphy scratched his head
for a moment and then a smile of en
lightenment crossed his face.
“Sure, captain,” he said pleasantly,
“you’re quite right. Why should he?”

filled with the love and energy for
her work that has characterized her
whole life, impelling her to finish her
education after her early marriage
which occurred at the age of fourteen,
she had me, since she went to bed,
bring to the office recent articles
and clippings saved all through the
years of her work, that she wanted
me to continue to use in her depart

“Mother Meb,” although resting from
her labors, will yet speak to us through
the paper and the department she so
much loved.
When I told her in that last talk
that we would try as soon as possible
to select the best of her chats and
writings, we had used and put them
in book form to be used as a premium
with The Golden Age, her face light
ed up with a glowing appreciation.
She pressed my hand with both hers
and said: “That’s good, so much I have
written is scattred where it can never
be found. I shall be glad for you to
gather those you have together for
my friends.”
Truly, hers was a beautiful life of
self-sacrificing service to the world,
