THE GOLDEN AGE FOR WEEK OF AUG. 28
A beauty oft I’ve seen
Have watched the beaming eyes;
The soft hair’s glossy sheen,
The fall and rise
Os color tides
Upon the ocean of the cheeks
As from enchanted spheres
To listening ears,
Love’s music speaks.
But now I find, in you,
All graces blend,
A heart made sweet and pure
Through suffering;
A soul whose wondrous eyes
See only light;
Whose soft wings brush the skies
THE YOUNG MERCHANTS
Two country lads came at an early
hour to a market town, and, arranging
their little stands, sat down to wait
for customers. One was furnished
with fruits and vegetables of the boy’s
own cultivation, and the other was
lobsters and fish. The market hours
passed along, and each little merchant
saw with pleasure his stores steadily
decreasing, and an equivalent in sil
ver shining in his little money cup.
The last melon lay on Harry's stand,
which a gentleman came by, and plac
ing his hand upon it, said:
“What a fine large melon! What
do you ask for it, boy?”
“The melon is the last I have, sir,
and though it looks very fair, there
is an unsound spot in it,” said the
boy, turning it over.
“So there is,” said the man; T
think I will not take it. But,” he add
ed, looking into the boy’s fine, open
countenance, “is it very business like
to point out the defects of your fruits
to the customers?”
“It is better than being dishonest,”
said the boy, modestly.
“You are right, little fello-w; always
remember that principle, and you will
find favor with God and man also. I
shall remember your little stand in the
future.”
“Are those lobsters fresh?” he con
tinued, turning to Ben Williams.
“Yes, sir, fresh this morning; I
caught them myself,” was the reply,
and a purchase being made, the gen
tleman went away.
“Harry, w’hat a fool you were to
show the gentleman that spot in the
melon. Now r you take it home for
your pains, or throw it away. How
much wiser is he about those lobsters
I caught yesterday? Sold them for
the price I did the fresh ones. He
would never have looked at the melon
until he had gone aw’ay.”
“Ben, I would not tell a lie, or act
one either, for twice what I have earn
ed this morning. Besides, I shall be
better off in the end; for I have gain
ed a customer, and you have lost
one.”
The next market day Ben and Har
ry were on hand again, one with his
fruit and vegetables, the other with
fish, lobsters, etc.

YOU
With plumage white.
If in your love’s dear home
One’s heart might abide,
Find in its humblest room
A place to hide;
A shelter from all storms,
A refuge true,
That thrice blest heart would have
In you, yes, you.
I thought that I had loved
In days gone by
Sc rich the flame that glowed
So bright, so high
Upon the altar of my heart
So great the woe
The anguish of my soul
To know that it must die.
“Harry,” said Ben, “don’t be such
a fool today as you were last time.
Let customers find out the bad spots
themselves. You’ll never make any
money that way.”
“I am going to be honest and true,
if I never make any money,” said
Harry.
Just then they espied their custom
er of the preceding day approaching,
accompanied by a tall, dignified, be
nevolent looking man with gray hair
and wearing gold spectacles and car
rying a gold-headed cane.
“These are the boys,” said the cus
tomer as they nearer the boys’ stand.
“Which is the honest one?” said
the benevolent looking man; “this
one?”
“No, indeed! I bought some lob
sters of him, on his word that they
were fresh, and they were not fit to
eat. This is the honest boy (pointing
to Harry), and be show’s it in his
fa ec.”
The upshot of this affair was that
Harry was then and there engaged to
be office boy in the B'irst National
1 ank, and he made his way, by his
irankness and honesty, from office boy
f, » cashier, and is now filling that po
sition at a salary of four thousand dol
lars a pear.
All boys cannot become cashiers of
banks and make lots of money but
they can all grow up to be useful, hon
ored citizens, respected by all, which
alone is reward enough.
Ben is a poor, worthless drunken
hanger on at the markets, and there
is no prospect of anything better for
him in the future. A man who, by
lying and cheating, drives away one
customer a day, will in a little while
have very few left, and they will soon
find him out and leave him.
GOING AS A MISSIONARY.
Dear “Brother Willie.”
You visited our school two years
ago today. Since then I have been
very much discouraged and felt sure
I could never do the work my Heaven
ly Father had called me to —the for
eign mission field—when I thought of
these words: “Let nothing discourage
you—never give up.” For I knew that
God had called me and that away
would be provided, yet I must do my
part in obtaining away. I was very
much impressed by the purpose of
Miss “Plucky Purpose.” I do hope
she will never stop until she has
