REVIVAL ECHOES FROM LINCOLN McCONNELL
NEW PASTOR OF THE “BROUGHTON TABERNACLE,’’ ATLANTA, HAS HAD A WONDERFUL REVIVAL MEETING THIS YEAR.
COMING TO NEW FIELD “WITH LARGE HOPES’’ FIRST SUNDAY IN SEPTEMBER.
B.
ECAUSE of his own remarkable career,
and also because of the widespread in
terest gathering about the incoming
pastor of the Baptist Tabernacle—
“Broughtons Tabernacle,” Atlanta. The Gol
den Age is giving here some echoes of revival
victories recently led by that stalwart figure
in the American pulpit, Dr. Lincoln McCon
nell.
C oncerning his new Tabernacle pastorate to
which he comes the first Sunday in September,
Dr. McConnell speaks as follows in a personal
letter to the editor:
“I find myself looking forward to my new
work in Atlanta with large hopes and hum
ble confidence. I feel, somehow, that the Lord
is going to give us a glorious victory. I am
so glad that Dr. Broughton is to be in Atlanta
for a few days in September to give his bless
ing to the union between his old neighbor of
o er dajs and the church he has loved so
well.”
Two Saloon Men Converted.
The last revival conducted by Dr. McCon
nell (who was recently given the degree of
“Doctor of Laws by Kentucky University)
was held at (’ape Giradeau, Mo. It was the
second great union meeting he has held there
and the town was mightily stirred. Among the
notable converts in (’ape Giradeau were two sa
loon keepers. They quit their business, of
course, and the whole community was start
led by their conversion.
A Clean Sweep at Clearfield.
Clearfield, Pa., was almost like Enid, Okla.,
where there were over 2.300 conversions dur
ing Dr. McConnell’s union meeting of six
weeks. The Clearfield Daily Public Spirit tells
of a great Saturday night meeting with fifty
conversions, almost by a monster street
demonstration, almost the entire congregation
marching up the street, singing and having
an inspiring service in front of the Court
House; and then telling of the last Sunday of
this wonderful meeting, the Public Spirit says:
Yesterday was a great day in the history
of the McConnell meetings and last night’s
service capped the climax. The tabernacle
was packed at all services. God was there in
wonderful power and there were at least 125
conversions during the day. The people re
sponded nobly to the call of the finance com
mittee for a free will offering for Dr. McCon
nell and his fellow workers and twenty-five
hundred dollars was raised without any trou
ble. The special musical feature of the day
was the great singing of the chorus. They
sang as they never sang before and the taber
nacle rang with sweet melody. At the men’s
meeting a male quartette composed of Joseph
Phillips, H. F. Beck, James Knight and E. R.
Sehorno sang “What More Could He Do?”
with pleasing effect. At the evening service
Harold Knight sang “One( Sweetly Solemn
Thought” in his clear sweet voice. Mr. Dibble
and Miss Mary Mitchell delighted the audi
ence with a beautiful duet, “God Will Not
Let Me Go.”
At the morning service, Dr. McConnell
preached a fine sermon from the text, “Let us
run with patience the race that is set before
us. ’ ’
The only people who run the Christian race
successfully are those who see the value of a

Christian life and are willing to strive after
it. If you are going to be a successful Chris
tian, you must look upon Christianity as worth
while. It is worth "while to be in earnest,
but you must also run the race with patience.
When we are tempted to break away we
must remember the prize. If we are to suc
ceed we must lay aside every weight and give
up the sin that so easily besets us. Among
the weights are pleasure and business. The
best training is the study of God’s word and
prayer.
To be a Christian means to give yourself
the natural man into the power of God Al
mighty and let him control your natural pow
ers and help you to live the right kind of
a life. If you have a temper God will.sanc
tify it and turn it into energy for God Al
mighty. If you want to keep right look unto
Jesus the author and finisher of your faith.
Mrs. McConnell held a remarkably fine ser
vice for women at 3 o’clock in the Presbyte
rian church. The church was crowded. At
this service the ladies raised a purse of SBS for
Mrs. McConnell as a token of their high es
teem.
Speaks to Two Thousand Men.
At the same hour, Dr. McConnell addressed
a great audience of 2,000 men. He preached
one of his strongest sermons. His theme was
“A Fallen King.”
David had committed a great sin. He had
taken the wife of another man, because he ad
mired her beauty and had caused the man to
be put in the forefront of the army where
he would be killed.
1. It was a great sin because it broke God’s
law. We don’t think of any sin of ours un
less it is an offense to society. No man has
a right to do what he pleases if what he does
violates the laws of God.
2. It was a great sin because it was the
sin of a mature man. It is no little thing
to sin against the light.
3. It was a great sin because it was the
sin of a man of influence. We all have an
influence on somebody else. You are a great
sinner just in proportion as other people are
influenced to look on these things as you do.
4. It was a great sin because it was the
sin of a father. Somebody else is affected by
your conduct. You can’t sin without touch
ing somebody else.
David repented with a great repentance. 1.
He never dodged. When the prophet told him
the story of his sin, he was willing to take the
application to himself. He confessed to sin
because he acknowledged Almighty God.
2. He did his dead level best to show that
he was repentant. He never attempted to do
that kind of thing again. He did the best he
could to make amends for his conduct. God
forgave him with forgiveness. Give God a
chance to put your feet on the Rock of Ages
and he will hold you there.
At the evening service Dr. McConnell spoke
in warm terms of his appreciation of the kind
ness and the hospitality of the people of Clear
field. He said he would always hold us in
pleasant memory. He said in proportion to
the size of the town, tabernacle and the length
of time he had been here this was the largest
Free will offering he had ever received.
Dr. McConnell preached a strong sermon
from the 12th chapter of Hebrews, “How shall
we escape if we neglect so great salvation?”
Neglect is the cause of a great many fail
ures in the Christian life. The only people
who backslide are those who neglect. Take
time to be holy, study God’s word and be
much in prayer.
You can’t travel toward heaven and go all
the time with the crowd traveling the other
way. A good many people say, if salvation is
a gift it don’t matter when I get it, just so
I get it. The Bible says, “Seek ye the Lord
while he may be found. Call on him while he
is near.” You have got to receive religion,
you have got to believe it, you have got to act
it if it is to do you any good.
The neglect of function means the loss of
faculty. -The function of the eye is sight, if
I refuse to use it, I lose the power to see. Jesus
looked around him and said, “Having eyes,
they see not, having ears they hear not.” You
have shut the voice of God from you. By
doing this you have lost the power to be moved.
Over four-fifths of the people who enter the
kingdom of God do so before their 10th year.
Negligence robs us of life and hope and of a
happy future.
Work That Lasts.
The following telegram was received this
morning by Dr. McConnell in answer to the
one sent from here last week:
Enid, Okla.
Lincoln McConnell,
Clearfield, Pa.
The Christian Men’s Union, of Enid, request
you to carry our appreciation to the men of
Clearfield for their telegram of greeting and
encouragement. We only envy them in their
opportunity to hear your powerful addresses.
On next Sunday we will send 50 men to Hun
ter, Okla., to organize a Christian Men’s Union
there.

and received his spirit. That is death; the
body falling asleep, the spirit waking to a
higher, richer, brighter life in the presence of
Christ. They broke into Stephen’s speech.
They did not let him finish it. But they did
not prevent the finishing all the same. Be
ing dead he yet speaketh. There was a young
man standing out there- holding the clothes, the
looser garments of those who were stoning
him. That young man caught a glimpse of
that angelic face and heard the prayer for
those who killed him. It went to his heart,
and as you trace that young man through
life you have the finishing of Stephen’s ad
dress. You have Paul raised to spiritual life
by the death of Stephen. Do not tell me that
Stephen’s life was cut short; that it was un
finished, for my part I don’t believe the life
of any Christian is ever unfinished. In etern
ity we shall see that the youngest child did
their work for God. What I want you to do,
friend, is to get into right relation with Ste
phen’s Saviour, with Stephen’s God, and re
ceive the forgiveness of your sins, which will
give you power as Stephen had it and victory
over death. Oh, will you not take the Christ
of Stephen who stands ready now to help you
ami receive you if you will?
