EVE AND HER DEPARTMENT
YOU CAN HELP!
“Home is the blossom of which
heaven is the fruit —the spot of
blessed memories.”
The heart of our country lives in
its homes and the best test of insti
tutions is in the domestic character
of the people.
My little home was once free from
encumbrance but today it is burdened
with a mortgage bearing 10 percent,
interest. Financial reverses came and
sickness and death in my family aug
mented the trouble. I have been
passing through the bitter watersi of
Marah ever since this transpired.
But Mrs. Lindsey has kindly given
me permission to solicit subscriptions
for The Golden Age through the
Household, and if I get a good, long
list of subscribers, the commission al
lowed me, will help to cancel this
debt. I desire intensely to pay up
this death-head on my little home
which is to me the most hallowed
spot on earth. So I tarn making a spe
cial plea to all the readers of the pa
per. You can help me if you will.
THE MASTER’S WAY.
The old squire said as he stood by the
gate
And his neighbor, the deacon, went
by,
“In spite of my bank stock and real
estate,
You are better off, deacon, than I.
We’re both growing old and the end
is drawing near,
You have less of the world to resign,
But in Heaven’s appraisal your assets
I fear
Will reckon up greater than mine.
They say I am rich, but I’m feeling so
poor
I wish I could swap with you even —
The pounds I have lived for and laid
up in store,
For the shillings and pence you have
given”
“Well, Squire,” said the deacon with
shrewd common sense.
While his eye had a twinkle of fun,
“Let your pounds take the way of my
shillings and pence
And the thing can be easily done.”
DREAD OF AN OPERATION.
N. Manchester, Ind. —Mrs. Eva Ba
shore, of this place, says, “I suffered
female misery of every description.
Two doctors attended me, an I advised
an operation. I lost weight until I
weighed only ninety pounds. I dread
ed an operation, and, instead, began
to take Caedui. In a short time, 1
gained 25 pounds, and fell as well as
I ver did. Cardui, I am sure, saved
my life.” Cardui is today used in
thousands of homes, where it Mieves
pain and brings back strength and
ambition. It is a woman’s medicine,
for women’s ailments, and you are
urged to try it for your troubles. Ask
your druggist. He will tell you about
Cardui.

USEFUL RECIPES
Sore Throat. —A gargle of salt and
vinegar, with a little cayenne pepper,
is excellent for curing sore throat.
It stimulates the glad, promotes free
secretions, and will often make a cure
in a few hours.
Fritters. —'One cup of sour milk, one
egg, one teaspoon soda, one-half tea
spoon salt, and flour to make a bat
ter thick enough to drop from a
spoon; drop into hot lard and fry to
a light brown.
Cold in the Head. — This can be
cured at once if taken in time. Dis
solve a tablespoonful of pulverized
borax in a pint of hot water; when
tepid, snuff some up the nostrils two
or three times a day; or use 'the dry
powered borax like snuff, taking a
pinch as often as required.
Ginger Beer. — Ten pounds of sugar,
nine ounces llemon juice, one-half
pound of honey, eleven ounces bruis
ed ginger root, nine gallons of water,
and three pints of yeast. Boil the
ginger half an hour in one gallon of
water and then add the rest of the
water and ingredients, and strain.
Add the beaten white of an egg, one
half ounce essence of lemon, and let
stand four days, when it may be
bottled.
Dog Bite. —An aged forrester has
published the following in a Leipzig
journal: “I do not wish to carry to
my grave my much proved cure for
the bite of mad dogs, but will publish
the same as the last service which I
can offer to the world: wash the
wound perfectly clean with wine vin
egar and tepid water; then dry it.
Afterward pour into the wound a few
drops of muriatic acid; for mineral
acids destroy the poison of the dog’s
saliva.”
In fashionable restaurant a new
millionaire with no knowledge of
French and no desire to expose his
Ignorance, pointed to a line on the
menu and said to the waiter:
“I’ll have some of that.”
“I’m sorry,” the waiter answered,
“but the band is playing that.” —
