GOOD-BYE
By JULIA IVERSON LANE.
Was it good bye we said last night,
Sweetheart of mine?
Was it your face drifting from my
sight
That made my heart repine?
Was it your loved hand leaving mine,
Your sweet voice, did it sigh?
Oh, did a pang pierce that soul of
thine
As you murmered the word good
bye ?
It was good-bye, heart of my heart,
The morning has taught me so,
The flowers, the bird songs that made
RULES FOR PARENTS.
1. Give yourself, then your child,
to God. It is but giving Him His
own. Not to do it is robbing God:
2. Always prefer virtue to wealth
—the honor that comes from God to
the honor that comes from men. Do
this for yourself. Dio it for your
child.
3. Let your whole course be to
raise your child to a high standard —
Do not sink into childishness yourself.
4. Give no heedless commands, but
when you command, require prompt
obedience.
5. Never indulge a child in cruelty,
even to an insect.
6. Cultivate a sympathy with your
child in all lawful joys and sorrows.
7. Be sure that you never correct
a child until you know that he de
serves correction. Hear its story first
and fully.
8. Never allow your child to while
and fret, or bear grudges.
9. Early inculcate frankness, can

10. The knowledge and fear of the
Lord are the beginning of wisdom.
11. Never mortify your child by up
braiding it with dullness, neither in
spire it with self-conceit.
TRYING TO FIND USES FOR
AILANTHUS
Excelsior can not be made from any
or all woods. 'Accord’ng tc popular no
tion it is a product of wood waste, but
this is not usually the case. For ex
ample, the forest service, which has
been experimenting to discover uses
for ailanthus, some times known as
Paradise tree, or Tree of Heaven,
finds that it probably will not make
good excelsior.
There are great quantities of ailan
thus in the east and especially in
Ohio and Mississippi valleys, where
it has been naturalized for specimens
introduced rom China until it is now
more abundant than some of the na
tive species.
Its wood has been used in small
quantities for boxes and crates, but
no other use has been reported. The
Indiana state board of forestry and
the forest service cooperated in se
curing a small consignment for an ex
celsior factory, where it was found
that ailanthus does not work up into
good excelsior because the product
was not springv and the strands
tended to break and crumble under
pressure. This moy have been due to
some measure to the fact that the

BE HONEST EVEN WITH THE
RAILROADS.
Athens, Ga., Aug. 19. —Under the
heading, “Be honest Even with the
Railroad,” The Banner of this city
makes the following editorial com
ment regarding the contention of the
railroads that the postoflice depart
ment is underpaying them for hand
ling the mails.
“To carry the people’s mail quickly,
safely and frequently is a social ob
ligation which the railroads freely con
cede. It is a service voluntarily per
formed, for no law compels a railroad
company to carry mails unless it con
tracts to do so. The courts hold,
however, that if the railroads so con
tract, they must do so on terms named
by the government.

A WISE PLAN.
Summer has passed and the early
fall days have brought with them
changes in every sphere of activity
Young people everywhere are taking
up their studies and developing their
varied talents. Many of them will
make a special study of music, for
music has come to be regarded as an
almost indispensable accomplishment.
One of the first questions you hear
with reference to a student’s accom
plishments now a days is, does he or
she play the piano?
Os course you want your boy or girl
to play the piano well. Then one of
the first considerations is, have you a
first class instrument in your home?
The degree of success which your
children will attain in music will de
pend largely upon the quality of their
instrument, for it will become their
inspiration and daily companion. Get
a sweet toned piano; one that is guar
anteed against defects in workman
shin or material, and your children
will appreciate the beauty of music,
and practicing will be a pleasure. Or,
if there are no young people in your
home, get a high grade self-player pia
no for your own pleasure.
Such pianos and self-players are or
dinarily sold at high prices, for there
are heavy expences connected with
selling them through dealers and com
mission agents, and you have to pay
these expenses as well as the factory
rust. But if you will place vpur order
through the Golden Age Piano Club
yu’i can get the benefit of the lowest
factory nrice. which annlies onlv on
orders for hundred instruments
or more. Each of the one hundred
therebv helps the other in
heloino- himself, and yet each is re
sponsible or>iv for h’s own purchase.
