.4zV OPEN DOOR FOR THE GIRLS.
After completing my studies of nine
years at high school and at the Johns
Hopkins, and after spending four
years in theological studies by means
of hard struggle and keen sacrifice
the question came to me in what way
I could most usefully lend a hand.
During my own study I had at times
to liv by doing my own cooking
and spending ten or fifteen cents a
clay. My heart was strongly drawn
out to the struggling boys and girls.
During my own studies I had at times
had teachers who were unbelievers, and
I realized the danger that besets a stu
dent in many of our large colleges in
loss of faith. It seemed to me that
if I could help those who could not
otherwise secure an education, and
could help them see God in all things
as I had learned to see Him, that I
could in this way best advance God’s
kingdom.
In several years of work in the
mountains I have the satisfaction of
helping to an education many who
are to me a source of great satisfac
tion. Among these are a number of
ministers, a missionary, teachers, and
others in the professions of law, medi
cine, and dentistry. But while boys
can earn money through vacation,
girls whose parents are unable to pay
have little chance to secure an educa
tion. For years I have been burdened
with the desire to see some way opened
for these. I feel that God is answer
ing my prayer. The Home Mission

SUGGESTIVE THOUGHTS.
TFAat Shall I do?
I. Enter the Promised Land. Vs. 1
to 5.
The tribes of Reuben and Gad and
half the tribe of Manasseh had asked
and received their inheritance east of
the Jordan. (Joshua 13:8). It would
have been far better for them had they
fully obeyed the Lord and entered the
land. They obtained what they asked,
but their choice proved to be a very
foolish one as they were the first to
fall before the enemies of Israel when
the kingdom broke up. Their fall
also made way for the enemy to over
come all Israel. This is true now.
the men and women in the church that
will not fully obey the Lord are the
first to fall before the enemy and
make way for the powers of darkness
to overcome others.
ZZ. Stand for God’s Word. Vs 6 to 9.
Caleb was not an Israelite by birth
(V. 6, Gen. 15:19, Josh. 15:13), but
he belonged to the true Israel of God

school. It has seemed best to make it
a boarding school for girls.
This fall I decided that if God would
send needy girls we would receive them
in faith. As a matter of fact, of all
the girls with us every one but one
needed help. We have been able
through friends to secure for some of
them financial assistance, and for
some clothes. But so little money was
coming in for board that I had to
look to God for money to pay for
groceries. I did not see how it could
come. But God found away, most
unexpected. A gentleman and his
wife, lovely Christians, seeking health,
were looking in this section for a
suitable place to stay this fall. After
looking at various places they asked
us to take them in. We did so and
their board money at usual boarding
house prices made up our deficiency.
It all seemed of God. It was not every
one who would have fitted in to the
life of the institution as they did. And
we parted with mutual regret.
We do not know how the way will
be provided for the spring, but we feel
sure it will be all right. God is help
ing us.

By B. LACY HOGE, Norfolk, Va.
12, 1 Peter 3:4, Gal. 6-15). By faith
he got more than the crumbs that fell
from the table, he got the biggest load
in Israel. (Matt. 15:26 to 28). His
faith removed mountains and obtain
ed for him the mountain. (V. 12,
Mark 11:22 and 23, Mark 9: 23). He
took his stand and based his claim on
the word of God. (Vs. 6 and 9, Josh.
1:3, Num. 14:24, Dent. 1:35 and 37).
There was no uncertainty about Cal
eb’s inheritance. All of God’s prom
ises are certain and sure. If there is
a land you wish for an inheritance,
step out on it by faith and it will be
yours. (Heb. 6:11 and 12, Heb. 11:
5 and 6). As Caleb obtained an in
heritance for himself and for his
children so we can obtain God’s bless
ing for ourselves and for our chil
dren. (Acts. 16:31).
ZZ7. Stand for God V. 8.
When the spies sent by Moses re
turned from searching the land and
made their report, Caleb had but one
man to stand with him. As he looks
back after 45 years he has no sorrow
that he had the courage to stand alone
for God. It was not very pleasant
to stand alone for God at that day,
(Num. 14:10) but it filled his heart
with joy when he obtained his inheri
tance. The man that wholly follows
the Lord will sometimes have to stand
alone for God and the truth. It is
not a pleasant thing to do, but it is a
wise thing to do. It always pays in
might earn enough for at least a part
of their expenses without interfering
too greatly with their school work. So
I have been investigating industrial
plans for several years.. Os all that
came to my attention it seemed that
here the most feasible was weaving
Hand weaving is a native industry
By means of a suitable loom it would
still be very profitable. In answer to
prayer I now have the assurance that
we will be able to begin weaving car
pets and various articles after Christ
mas. This will make it possible for
us to teach girl sa splendid home in
dustry and at the same time to help
them help themselves. We believe
that any girl by working a couple of
hours a day can pay the very small
cost of an education at Cherokee Ac
ademy. About SBO a year will pay
her necessary expenses here.
We are not seeking to compete for
patronage with other established
schools, but are seeking a sphere of
usefulness in doing what has to a large
extent been left undone. We are not
doing a cheap work. We have five
teachers and offer the best of training
as has been shown in the county ex
aminations for teachers. Three of our
teachers are themselves college gradu
ates. But we are trying to make a
the end to stand alone for God.
IV. Praise God for Health and
Strength. Vs. 10 to 12.
Caleb had waited a long time for
his inheritance, but kept his word and
kept the inheritance for Caleb for 45
years. He also kept Caleb alive and
in health and strength after all his
companions were dead except Joshua.
Caleb waited on the Lord and renewed
his strength (Isa. 40:31). At 85 he
testified that he was as strong as at
40 “for war both to go out and to
come in” (V. 11). We have the same
God and if we will “wait upon the
Lord” he will renew our strength and
keep us strong to do the work he has
called us to do. God had a glorious
inheritance for His people, and will
keep us and keep the inheritance for
us (1 Peter 1:4 and 5). Let us go
forward with His work, praise Him
for life and health and strength and
wait His turn to give us all promised
blessings.
U. Wholly Follow the Lord. Vs. 8
and 9 and 12 to 14.
Caleb obtained his inheritance “be
cause that he wholly followed the Lord
God of Israel (V. 14). Joshua heard
God’s promise to Caleb, and, when his
plea was made, acted according to the
promise of the Lord (Num. 14: 24 to
30, Deut. 1:36 to 38). Joshua not
only recognized the force of Caleb’s
plea and gave him the inheritance he

way for those who cannot attend our
other schools. Here, at the corner
where Tennessee, Georgia, and North
Carolina touch, we reach out a help
ing hand to struggling ones in the three
states. We take for our sphere the or
phan, too old for the orphanages, the
factory girl whose lives have been
spent in labor, and who now desire to
fit themselves for life. We take for
our sphere the girls from mountain
covers whose parents are too poor to
pay their way in the other denomina
tional or state schools that have been
established. And we take those who
desire in this atmosphere of service
to come to study the Word of God to
train for Christian work.
We realize that the industrial de
partment is going to require much care
and much thought. But we feel that we
have one to take charge who can make
it a success. Our situation will also
be ideal. We already have assurance
of help from Christian friends. The
vision that leads us on is this. We
look ahead and see the day when a
large number of girls strong and
worthy, whose gifts might otherwise
have been undeveloped, will here be
preparing for lives of usefulness, and
for Christian work, while earning their
way by this beautiful handwork. We
believe the vision is of God, and we
pray Him to aid us in bringing it to
fulfilment.
