THE GOLDEN AGE FOR WEEK OF FEB. 5, 1914
Perfecting the Past and Shaping the
Future
There are others who want to ex
cuse themselves on the ground that
they do not know what to do. Others
that they are re-occupied. And there
are others who want to excuse them
selves on the ground that they have
no time and no talent and no money,
and nothing to give or to do with.
And all the while this fact remains,
that the Kingdom of God suffereth vio
lence, and it is calling for help. The
Kingdom of God calling for help, and
harder and harder and harder do we
find it to get men and women who
are actually willing to help where obli
gation ds involved. Now, what is
wanted to-day is faithfulness to the
Kingdom. I would to God I could
write that word Kingdom on your
heart as big as I feel it on mine.
KINGDOM! Just that one word would
span across the horizon and compass
both sides of the hemisphere. KING
DOM! I say, what we want is fidelity
to the Kingdom at any cost.
First, of all, we owe it to ourselves

to be faithful. —Every man owes it to
himself to be the best and do the best
he possibly can. Every man has
time, talent, money. He may not
have much, but he has some. And
every man is responsible for the use
he makes of what he has. Remem
ber the talents. At the day of reck
oning, God Almighty is just as much
concerned about the way you use your
one little talent as He is about the
way the man uses his five or his ten
or his hundred.
We owe it to those, associated with
us. —The Kingdom of God is distinctly
a co-operative business. And any co
operative business is going to suffer
so long as there is a lack of co-opera
ton. Or, to put it another way, no
chain is stronger than its weakest
link. And the Kingdom is depend
ent upon everyone in the Kingdom to
do his part for the Kingdom.
We owe it to the age in which we
live. —Every man is indebted to his
age. Paul was indebted to his age
when he said, “I am a debtor, both
to the Greeks and to the Barbarians,
both to the wise and to the unwise.”
Paul was indebted to them because,
first of all, he was a Christian. He
was a Kingdom man, and he was in
debted to every part of the world for
the Kingdom blessing. But that is
not all of it; Paul is in debt to them.
He had received help from the Greeks,
the Barbarians, the wise and the un
wise, and this fact put him under
obligations until he paid the debt. It
is so with every one of us. We are
in debt to our age, for our age has
contributed a great deal to us in our
effort to propagate the Kingdom. It
has contributed the civilization that
we have. It has contributed our pro
tection of life and property and home.
It has contributed to our religious priv
ileges. We never could come and
worship God according to the dictates
of our conscience if it were not for
what the age has done.
We owe it to those who have pre
ceded us. —As it was true of these He
brew Christians that upon them rest
ed the responsibility of carrying to
perfection the work of the fathers, so
it is true of us. No man can disre
gard the work of his fathers and sat
isfy the demands of God. ,They we?e
called hence before their work was
finished, and their work is left for us
