THE GOLDEN AGE FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 1, 1914 SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON By B. Lacy Hoge, Norfolk, Va. THE LAST SUPPER. October 11, 1914. Time 30 A. D. Mark 14-12 to 25. Place, Jerusalem. THE GOLDEN TEXT: “As often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye proclaim the Lord’s death till He come.” 1 Cor. 11-26. SUGGESTIVE THOUGHTS. I— ASK JESUS WHAT HE WILL HAVE YOU DO. Vs. 12-16. The disciples came to Jesus and asked Him, “Where wilt thou that we make ready for thee to eat the Passover?” Jesus told them, but gave strange and improbable directions by which the man was to be known at whose house He would eat the Pass over. (Luke 22-10 to 21; Matt. 26-17 to 19). The disciples obeyed the Master, asking no' questions. They went and found that it all came out just like Jesus said it would. (Matt. 26-17 to 19, Luke 22-12). If we will obey Jesus we will always find his words true. It was a blessed priv ilege that those disciples had of pre paring for Jesus to eat the Pass over. They got this privilege by asking for it. We can get the priv ilege of serving Christ at the place and in the way He wishes us by sim ply asking Him. Paul, as soon as he owned Jesus as his Lord, said “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? (Acts. 9-6). The Lord answer ed him and gave him God’s plan for his life. (Acts 9-6; Acts 26 to 19.) ll BE LOYAL TO JESUS. Vs. 17 to 21. Jesus knows the secrets of our hearts. “All things are naked and open unto the eyes of Him, with whom we have to do.” (Heb. 4-13). He knows the heart of each of the disciples. He knew that Judas was the one that would betray Him.” John 6-70 and 71). It is possible for you, like Judas, to betray the Master, but remember that His grace is sufficient “to keep you from fall ing and to present you faultless be fore the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.” (Jude 24-2 Cor. 9-8, 2 Cor. 12-9). You may be weak but will all your weakness go to Jesus and He will supply the strength to match your weakness. His strength is made perfect in weakness. (2 Cor. 12-9). Go to Him and He will supply all your needs and make you loyal to Him and His cause. (Phil. 4-19). 111 KNOW YOUR STANDING WITH GOD. Vs. 18 to 20. We should never be in doubt as to our standing with God. We ought to know if we are saved. We should know whether or not our fellowship with God is broken. If we wish to know He will tell us, He will give the needed wisdom. (James 1-5). Don’t be satisfied until you know you are saved. Get right with God and His spirit will bear witness with your spirit that you are a child of God. (Rom. 8-16; Gal. 4-6). IV— KEEP THE LORD’S SUPPER. Vs. 22 to 25. There has been an endless discus sion over the Lord’s supper, and that, too, to little profit, I fear that it has lead many to partake of the Lord’s supper unworthily, “not dis cerning the Lord’s body.” (1 Cor. 11-29). Let us seek to know God’s word and will, and observe the Lord’s supper as He has directed in His word: Ist. Why should I observe the Lord’s supper? A. Because God’s word says “keep the ordinances.” (1 Cor. 11-2). B. I should keep the Lord’s supper to show His death and second com ing “For as often as ye eat this bread and drink of this cup, ye do show forth the Lord’s death till he come.” (1 Cor. 11-26.) 2nd. How should I keep the Lord’s supper? A. As delivered • unto us. “Keep the ordinances as I delivered them to you.” (1 Cor. 11-2). B. In rememberance of Christ. (Luke 22-19; 1 Cor. 11-25 and 26). C. In a worthy manner discerning the Lord’s body. (1 Cor. 11-28-29). D. Keep the ordinances in the or der delivered unto us. (1 Cor. 11-2). 3j?d. How were the ordinances de livered? A. Baptism. B. The Lord’s supper. The following examples are given in God’s word: Ist. The Lord Jesus was baptized at the beginning of His ministry, but did not institute the supper until just before His death. 2nd. The apostles were baptized before they observed the Lord’s sup per. 3rd. On the day of Pentecost the converts were first baptized and then observed the Lord’s supper. “They that gladly received His word were baptized.” (Acts 2-41). “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread and in prayer.” (Acts 2-42). Our Lord commanded His people to go to all nations and, first, make disciples, second baptize them, third, teach them to observe all the commandments. (Matt. 28-19 to 20 A. R. V.). 4th. Who should observe the Lord’s supper? Ist. Those who are walking or derly. “We command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourself from every brother that walketh disorderly.” (2 Thess. 3-6). 2d. Those who continue in the apostles doctrine and fellowship. (Acts. 2-42). A WOMAN’S APPEAL.
