10 CENT “CASCARETS”
IF BILIOUS OR COSTIVE
For Sick Headache, Sour Stomach,
Sluggish Liver and Bowels—They
work while you sleep.
Furred Tongue, Bad Taste, Indiges
tion, Sallow Skin and Miserable Head
aches come from a torpid liver and
clogged bowels, which cause your
stomach to become filled with undi
gested food, which sours and ferments
like garbage in a swill barrel. That’s
the first step to untold misery—indi-
gestion, foul gases, bad breath, yellow
skin, mental fears, everything that is
horrible and nauseating. A Cascaret
to-night will give your constipated
bowels a thorough cleansing and
straighten you out by morning. They
work while you sleep—a 10-cent box
from your druggist will keep you feel
ing good for months. •

A SPLENDID REGULATOR
PURELY VEGETABLE-HOT NARCOTIC
—“The Little Singer.”
I know what mother’s face is like, It’s like his whistle on the air,
Although I cannot see; It’s like his arms that take such care,
It's like the music of a bell, And never let me fall.
It’s like the way the roses smell,
It's like the secrets fairies tell— So I can tell what God is like,
All these it's like to me. The God whom no one sees;
He’s everything my mother means,
I know what father's face is like — He's everything my father seems,
I'm sure I know it all; He’s like my very sweetest dreams,
It’s like his step upon the stair, But greater than all these.
DICK, I’m not happy.”
There was a wistful note of long
ing in James Lorillard’s voice as he
spoke from his place by the great
south window of his home. The view
presented to his eyes was of splen
did beauty. The house stood in the
center of a magnificent garden. In
front stretched an avenue* of spruce
trees, beyond which lay meadows, and
fields fragrant with black-eyed jusans
and daisies. Then came the Manner
in g River blending into the horizon in
the distance.
“You have a good many things that
should help to bring happiness,” re
plied Dick Somerset evasively.
“Yes,” James answered thoughtful
ly, “but they don’t. I own this house
and all the grounds adjacent, an es
tate of over two hundred acres. 1
keep an automobile and a team of
carriage horses, and yet I am no hap
pier than if I were poor. Take for
example old Jack Lorimer, who lives
in the deserted boat-house down at the
river. His face is continually wreath
ed in smiles. He’s, over seventy and,
to all appearances, hasn’t had a dull
day in his life. Hour after hour, he
sits whittling with his jack-knife on
the ancient rickety wharf, whistling
merrily. The other day I said to him,
‘Jack, you don’t seem to have a care
in the world.’ For a moment he gazed
off toward the distant purpling hills,
then replied, ‘No, I haven’t.’ After a
pause he added, ‘He who has nothing,
has nothing to worry about; and When
I say nothing, I mean more than things
material. I mean a man who has a
clear conscience, nothing weighing on
his soul.’ Having given vent to this
bit of philosophy, he turned back to
his whittling, and as I turned away,
I frankly admit I envied that grand
old man.”
“Perhaps,” suggested Dick, “your
lack of contentment is the result of
your not having a definite purpose in
life. A life without purpose is with
out ambition, for ambition is the
crown of purpose.”
James looked interested.
“You certainly,” he said, smiling
slightly, “speak like a student of old
Jack Lorimer’s yourself 1 . Has he been
instilling into you some of his opti
mistic philosophy?’’
“Maybe I have learned a little from
him,” replied Dick. “I have spent
many a happy hour down at the old
boat-house listening to his quaint say
ings.”
THE GOLDEN AGE
THE BLIND CHILD
FINDING HAPPINESS
By Frank Owen.
“And you have learned —? ’ began
James.
“That a life lived for self alone is
wasted. Every man in the countryside
is a friend of Jack's. ‘Have you any
enemies?’ I asked him once, half jok
ingly. ‘Maybe,’ he drawled, ‘but I’ve
never met them, and I’ve lived a pret
ty long time.’ If I can say the same
when I reach his age, I will consider
my life has been well spent.”
“And so would I,” said Janies, with
interest, “but how are we to achieve
it? Can you tell me that? If so,
please proceed.”
“I will,” responded Dick after a
slight pause, “and I’ll speak absolute
ly plain to you, if you’ll let me. You
are devoting too much of your time to
pleasure, so much, in fact, that social
life is becoming irksome to you. Each
night you return from a dinner engage
ment or a party, when the day is
done. But what have you accomplish
ed? Nothing. You have not even
found happiness and, therefore, your
day has been wasted.”
“Your power of analysis is rather
wonderful!” said James, earnestly.
“You have drawn a very real picture
of my condition. Now, since you have
become acquainted with all the symp
toms, what remedy would you sug
gest?”
“I can’t do better than to repeat
what someone else has previously said.
Bind together your spare hours with
some definite purpose. For example,
join our Adult Bible Class, and since
you do not have to work many hours
a day, you will have a great deal of
THE VALUE OR FRESH AIR.
The oxygen of the air is the world’s
great scavenger.
Drawn into the lungs it oxidizes the
refuse in the blood through the lungs.
But when the lungs are engorged by
croup, catarrh or colds the oxygen can
not penetrate the phlegm and there
fore cannot reach the membranes
through which it purifies the blood.
Apply Mentholatum in the nostrils
and upon the throat and chest.
The body heat releases the aromatic
colatile oils contained in the Mentho
latum. ‘ These oils are pungent and
penetrating.
When inhaled they accelerate the
flow of the secretions, loosening the
hardened phlegm and encouraging its
expectoration.
Then comes the life-giving, refesh
ing air—nature’s restorative.
Mentholatum is also a germicide
and an antiseptic.
It also has a rapid healing effect
upon all inflamed surfaces, such as
chapped skin, burns and bruises.
