REV. FRANK M. WELLS
FAMOUS SOLDIER-PREACHER AND EVANGELIST AT WORK IN
TEXAS CITY AMONG HIS OLD COM RADES—MANY
CONVERSIONS—GIDEONS EVERYWHERE.
Dear Bro. Editor:
Whi.e here in Texas last summer,
in a remote village, I heard one of
the best lectures I ever listened to in
all my life. The speaker talked about
“Jerusalem under the Turks,” for
more than two hours, and laid heavy
emphasis on Salvation by grace, and
temperance. I shall never forget the
message or the man who gave it.
Here is one of his assertions that
went all through me. “I never saw a
man who smoked that had any more
manners than a horse. A horse will
“snort all over his owner,” without
any remorse of conscience. A smoker
wi'l puff an old stinking pipe in the
presence of clean Christian gentle
men, without any sense of guilt, mak
ing foul the pure air God has given
us to breathe, thereby forcing them
to breathe impure air. Do you think
it is right to burn up money when
there are so many children starving
for bread”
I decided at once to throw my pipe
away and never smoke again. The
speaker’s name is Wells. He was for
merly Chaplain of a regiment in the
Philippines. I suppose you have met
him. He gives more solid instruction
and Bible teaching in two hours than
any man I ever heard. He is mighty
in the Scriptures, and his argument
for temperance and clean living, is
unanswerable. Chaplain Wells ought
never to do anything e’se but teach
the Bible, and lecture to men. He is
thoroughly original and has a won
derful power over men. Sometimes
he is “as rough and as rasping as a
file.” He goes after sin in every form
PERFECT HEALTH IS EVERY
WOMAN’S RIGHT.
A Temperance Remedy That From
Girlhood to Old Age Has Been a
Blessing to Womanhood
M hen a girl becomes a woman,
when a woman becomes a mother,
when a woman passes through the
changes of life when health and
strength are most needed to withstand
the pain and distress often caused by
severe organic disturbances.
At these critical times women are
best fortified by the use of Dr. Fierce’s
Favorite Prescription, an eld remedy
of proved worth that keeps the entire
female system perfectly regulated and
in excellent condition.
Not a patent medicine because this
old prescription of Dr. Pierce's has its
ingredients published on wrapper.
Mothers, if your daughters are
weak, lack ambition, are troubled
with headaches, lassitude and are pale
and sickly, Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Pre
scription is just what they need to
surely bring the bloom of health to
their cheeks and make them strong
and healthy.
For all diseases peculiar to woman.
Dr. Favorite Prescription is a
powerful restorative. During the last
40 years it has banished from the
lives of tens of thousands of women
the pain, worry, misery and distress
caused by irregularities and diseases
of a feminine character.
If you are a sufferer, if your daugh
ter, mother, sister need help get Dr.
Pierce's Favorite Prescription in liquid

and harrows up conscience in his own
way. Every shot tells and he gets
what he shoots at. He pleads with
men to come to Christ with all their
sins. Twenty or more men came for
ward for prayer, and a dozen or more
professed conversion. Here is the
way he dealt with each new convert.
“Did you confess your sins to God
with full purpose of heart while I led
the prayer?” “Yes,” was the answer.
“Have you accepted Christ in the par
don and forgiveness of your sin, and
now take Him as your Lord, Saviour
and King?” “Yes sir,” was the an
swer. Then he prayed, that God
might ever keep the new converts.
Then he took the collection.
In another meeting, in Texas City,
I had the privilege of hearing him
again. It was at. the close of a four
weeks’ meeting, conducted by Dr.
Watson and Chaplain Wells. Fully
500 soldiers besides civilians, had
gathered in the Baptist Tabernacle.
Many of whom were associated with
Chaplain Wells in the Philippines.
There are about 8,000 soldiers, be
sides officers, in Camp in Texas City,
from nearly every state in the union.
I learned that Wells had invited
every soldier in the camp to the lec
ture that day. The house was full,
and others on the ou'tside who could
not get in. After he had led them in
a song service of thirty minutes, in
which he made every soldier sing.
My, how they did sing “At the Cross,”
and “There is a Fountain Filled With
Blood.” Then he led in prayer. He
then lectured for two hours, holding
the crowd in his grasp, and closed
with a tender appeal to men to come
to Christ, with all their guilt and sin.
Fully seventy-five came to the Altar.
Soldiers “fell over each other” to
shake hands with the famous evan
gelist. It was a great service. The
best men’s meeting I ever saw. Be
fore the prayer was offered, I slipped
away to take a ten o’clock car to Gal
veston. lam only a layman but real
ly believe Chaplain Wells’ lecture
“Jerusalem under the Turks,” is the
greatest gospel lecture ever delivered
in the United States. As a Gideon
let me urge all Gideons and Traveling
men to hear it whenever they can. I
very much doubt if there is another
man in all the denominations who
can handle a crowd of non church-go
ing and homeless men as well as Bro
Wells.
He gets his mail at Jackson, Tenn.,
and Houston, Texas, but his home is
on “The road.” His work as an evan
gelist and prohibition lecturer has
covered a dozen or more states, and
he is at home wherever he has his
hat and grip.
I commend him and his work to a'l
traveling men. Chaplain Wells sol
diered in the Philippines with Gen
eral J. Franklin Bell, the Command
ing Officer of this Division, and is
known everywhere as the man who
“knocked the canteen out of the
Army.” He believes that men should
be as clean in their living as women.
I believe he is right.
