I knew his health problems had been a major opponent for some time but he had been successful in winning the battle so often that I thought, or at least hoped, he would eventually con quer them all. Way back in the 1995- 1996 school year, I first met Stan Allen, who was a football and baseball assistant at Newton High School. We quickly formed a friendship through a love of athletics and Allen always offered compliments on the writing of a young sports journalist trying to make a living in a field which didn't offer much in the way of a paycheck. Since both of us were of, shall we say amble size, we would joke about certain things that those with the perfect body type would not be allowed to say in front of us. Allen would even joke about himself like when he had to special order a pair of baseball pants. While waiting for them to arrive he would wear a pair of sweatpants during games. “I’m ready for downtown Covington with this outfit,” he would laugh with a big smile on his face. I vividly remember one time the conversation turn ing to what local pizza place delivered the slowest. Allen said he called one place that informed him it would be more than a two-hour wait to which he said. “I could book a flight to Italy and get a pizza there in that time!” For years we would often greet each other by saying, “I’m booked on a flight to Italy.” On a more serious note, I learned a great deal about football from Allen. He eventually became offen sive coordinator at New ton and many times after practice we would sit and diagram plays in the field- house. It was usually me drawing up a scheme I had dreamed up in my head with Allen telling me why it would never work in a real game. Eventually, we both moved on to other jobs in other locations although we stayed in touch, never so far away that we couldn’t do so. When he was hired by new WBHS football coach David Wagner prior to the 2010 season I eager ly looked forward to being in the same location with him again. I certainly trea sure those four years even more now. His passing has been in the front of my mind in recent days. His big smile, his laugh and his overall likeable nature made it impossible not to like him. Today I think back two decades to my time cover ing a high school program where I met Stan Allen. Fate, as always, played a role in our paths cross ing. I’m glad it did. My thoughts are with his wife and family today and always.
