PAGE 6A BARROW JOURNAL • BARROW COUNTY NEWS WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3, 2016 Public Safety Supporting Local Law Enforcement TRIBUTE TO POLICE OFFICERS, DEPUTIES The Jug Tavern Squares, a local square dance club, hosted an event recently to thank local law enforcement for the duties it performs. ‘Heroes in Blue ’ recognized by local square dancers Winder’s square dance club the “Jug Tavern Squares” (JTS) held a dance last Friday night to show their appreci ation and pray for local law enforcement. Approximately 100 people attended, including officers from the Barrow County Sherriff’s Office and City of Winder Police Department, along with many dancers and visitors. Due to recent events the dance club wanted to show their support and gratitude for the officers who help keep the community a safe place to live, organizers said. The JTS plans to make the “Heroes in Blue” dance an annual event. Jug Tavern Squares dances every month on the second and fourth Friday at the Brad Akins YMCA in Winder and will be holding beginner dance lessons in September. Warehouse fire battled at Johns Manville Auburn Police Department APD arrests five The Auburn Police Department reported the follow ing arrests: •Stephen Frank Nichols, 45, of Greentree Drive. Auburn; shoplifting and probation violation. •Brenda Lee Lancaster, 49, of S. Broad Street, Wind er; probation violation. •Kelly Jo Hagans, 43, of Stonegate Drive. Winder; possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, pos session of a controlled substance/dangerous drug/gun or other dangerous weapons or marijuana by an inmate, financial transaction card fraud and abuse/neglect or exploitation of disabled or elderly person. •William Randall Todd, 46, of Perry Smith Road, Monroe; warrant arrest. •Bennie Joe Conerly, 40. of Kirkland Drive, Statham; felony probation violation. Statham Police Department SPD makes two arrests The Statham Police Department made two recent arrests including: •Patricia Lynn Sanderson, 54. of Cemetery Road, Winder; hit and run/duty of driver to stop at or return to the scene of an accident. •Daryll Gene Phillips. 53, of Alexander Road, Com merce; disorderly conduct. City of Winder reports sewage spill on July 27 The City of Winder reported a minor sewage spill on July 27, into a tributary to Cedar Creek. “The sanitary sewer collection system had a faulty pipe connection that contribute to the spill,” officials said. Approximately 5,050 gallons flowed into the tribu tary. The pipe crossing the tributary was repaired the same day the spill was discovered. At 3:30 a.m. on July 27, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 9-1-1 call reporting a fire at Johns Manville on Bankhead Highway. “Firefighters were dispatched to the business and found a large quantity of insulation burning in the warehouse,” said Captain Scott Dakin. Crews started working with the Manville staff to extinguish the fire.” Engine 4, Engine 5. Engine 7, Med 4, Med 5 and Battalion 1 responded to the scene. The fire started in a warehouse section of the business. Firefighters worked with the staff on the inside of the warehouse to contain the fire as the staff removed the burned product to a parking lot in the rear of the building. Other firefighters worked outside to finish extinguishing the product. Firefighters were on the scene for more than nine hours extinguishing the fire, “The Manville staff worked really well with us in coordinating the removal of the product,” said Captain Dakin. “Firefighters also did a great job working in the heat of the day to extinguish the fire.
