FUN LESSON
Bethlehem Christian Academy first graders learned about Beluga Whales at the Georgia Aquarium.
Bethlehem Christian students explore the sea
Special to the News-Journal
The first graders at Bethlehem
Christian Academy recently expe
rienced marine life up close and
personal, without ever heading to the
beach.
In a unique partnership with Sea
World, BCA teachers Jessica Sperry
and Kerrigan Jolly connected the
children for a live personal session
with orca trainers.
“Our document camera, an iPad,
and a Promethian board were all we
needed to watch the trainers with the
whale,” said Jolly. “The students and
trainers had immediate feedback, all
with the whale in sight.”
Next, the students headed to Atlan
ta’s own Georgia Aquarium for more
hands-on, minds-on science.
They put all of their learning
together for a grand finale “Aquat
ic Fair” at the school, where BCA
students presented an assigned sea
creature using creative models and
displays.
Students also published a non-fic
tion informational book with a host
of text features to share with parents,
grandparents, and fellow students
during the annual Aquatic Fair.
Said Jolly: “I am confident that
this project-based learning, which
is cross-curricular, incorporating sci
ence, writing, and reading, all inte
grated with technology, is a fantastic
way for young children to learn and
master information. Our ongoing
goal at BCA is to create a fabulous
environment for children to learn,
grow and become excited learners for
their futures.”

An Open Invitation
This is an open invitation to
The readers of the Barrow> Journal who
did not receive The Barrow’ County News.
Since I have survived to see my ninetieth birthday,
my wife and middle daughter Lynn both say,
“Let’s celebrate!” an offer I can’t refuse.
If you once enjoyed The
Top O The Hill;
if you jumped on our tram
poline for a thrill;
if you were a patient whom
I might have helped
(though, on seeing that nee
dle, you might have yelped);
if you played sports
at Winder High
and want to recall those
days gone by;
if you attended Winder FBC
and wish to reminisce with me;
If you heard me speak when you were in jail,
then I want to hear you tell your tale.
Wherever and however we might have met,
this invitation comes, so don’t forget.
On August 13, from two until five,
at the East Side Baptist, if I’m still alive,
we will gather to celebrate my ninetieth birthday.
(I never dreamed I would see that day.)
A “drop-in reception” is our plan,
and I hope to greet every woman and man
who gives me the honor of attending
and creating a memory that will be never ending.
My daughter, Lynn, is an amazing girl
and she says she is “planning for the world.”
So mark your calendar and make your plan
to help make Old Doc a happier man.
