The Winder-Barrow High
School softball team opened
its 2016 region schedule
with a convincing 10-1 win
in five innings against vis
iting Habersham Central
Tuesday.
The Lady Bulldoggs
(1-1 overall, 1-0 in Region
8-AAAAAA) took control
early with five runs in the
bottom of the first inning.
WBHS added one more in
the third and three more in
the fourth inning.
Alexis Berry earned the
win while the Lady Bull
doggs received a balanced
offensive attack led by Emily
Ferguson, Jakayla Sullivan,
Paige Skinner, Ansley John
son, Berry, Krystal Merrill
and T.K. Sauls.
"I am proud of the girls,”
said coach Monty McClure.
"We still have a long way
to go as team. I see some
things we need to work on
but this is a good group.
You are always happy to win
your first region game."
SEASON OPENER
A six-run top of the fifth
inning by visiting Loganville
High School helped give the
Lady Red Devils a 7-2 win
against Winder-Barrow High
School last Thursday in the
Lady Doggs season opener.
WBHS held a 2-1 advan
tage after four innings
against its former region foe,
but the Lady Devils respond
ed with six runs in the top of
the fifth. LHS put runners
on second and third with no
outs and then benefited from
a three-run homer.
By the time the top half
of the inning was over, LHS
had taken control by pushing
five runs across.
Merrill helped lead
WBHS with a homerun over
the center field fence in the
bottom of the fourth. The
Lady Bulldoggs put the first
run of the game on the board
in the bottom of the first on
a sacrifice fly by Cathleen
Nugue, scoring Ferguson,
who began the inning with a
leadoff walk.
Berry was the start
ing pitcher for WBHS and
worked four innings before
Nugue pitched a third of an
inning. Rose Johnson han
dled the pitching duties for
the final 1.2 innings for the
Lady Bulldoggs.
There were also some
bright defensive spots in the
season opener for WBHS as
the team turned a double
play in the top of the first. A
ground to Berry was thrown
home to Johnson who then
fired to first baseman Merrill
to complete the double play.
Krista Thompson also made
a diving catch in center field
for the Lady Doggs.
