High School Volleyball: Bethlehem Christian Academy
Lady Knights enter new season with plenty of talent on court
By Chris Bridges
Sports Editor
Even with the loss of six
seniors to graduation from
last year’s squad, Bethle
hem Christian Academy
volleyball coach Karen
Carlyle said she likes her
team’s potential for 2016.
“Our returning players
and new team members are
rising to the challenge and
are getting stronger every
day,” Carlyle said.
Returning starters Han
nah Wilson and Morganne
Brisby have been pushing
their teammates to work
toward a postseason berth.
Carlyle said Bailey
Brown and Mary Grace
Gaddy, who also return
from last season, are two of
the team’s captains and are
helping lead the players in
the weight room.
“Some of our keys to
success will be our unity on
the court, which this team
has built in a short time,”
BCA’s coach said. “They
work well together, like a
well-oiled machine.”
Haley Hensley will be
one of the team’s best set
ters. Lilly Dickinson will
be libero for the Lady
Knights.
“This is the first time I’ve
had a player who enjoys
digging on the court and
sacrificing herself to get
her hands on the volleyball
at all costs,” Carlyle said.
“Her defensive skills will
definitely help as the sea
son begins.”
BCA players began
weight training and condi
tioning at the beginning of
the summer and its coach
said there is a definite
improvement in strength
and endurance.
Senior Grace McCart
Bridges
continued
from IB
Fendley and the BCA
coaches kept their players
focused last week and the
result was a win in which
the Knights should have
won. There was no letdown
and no overlooking of an
opponent, Rather, BCA
went out and scored the
final 45 points of the game
to defeat Monsignor Dono
van and improve to 2-0.
Despite his team’s
impressive start this season,
Fendley said this week’s
opponent — Communi
ty Christian — will be a
strong challenge for his
team.
The BCA coach said ear
lier this week if his team
is not prepared to compete
from the opening kickoff, it
could end up being a tough
evening for the Knights.
In reality, few people out
side the BCA football lock
er room expected a great
deal from the Knights this
season. However. Fendley,
his coaches and players
never bought into that line
of thinking.
In fact, the team knows,
after its strong efforts in the
first two games, that goals
which may have seemed
out of reach in 2016 are
certainly possible.
It shows what hard work
and believing in yourself
can do. There’s a long way
to go before this football
season is over.
But if early indications
are true. 2016 may become
a football campaign to
remember at BCA for a
long time.

and sophomores Morgan
Locklar, Olivia Morgan and
Lindsey Price will all be
counted on as well this fall.
“I have a strong group
this year which should
make for an exciting sea
son,” their coach said.
“When we attended camp
at Florida State this sum
mer we came together and
set individual and team
goals. Some goals were
better fundamental work
like improving commu
nication on the court and
being there for each other.”
The team’s goal is to win
region and do better than
any team in program his
tory.
The 2013 squad advanced
to the Elite Eight. Goals
have been posted in the
locker room and players
are aware of individual pro
gram records such as most

aces and kills in a season.
“Many of my players
have their eyes set on mak
ing the record books this
year, and honestly, I believe
they can do it,” Carlyle said.
“Everyone has fought hard
to earn the right to play in
their position. I don’t have
a weak position open this
year. It’s going to be a great
season.”
