UNITED WAY KICKOFF
Matthew Purkey, the new president and CEO of
the United Way of Northeast Georgia, address
es the crowd during Friday’s kickoff event.

Barrow was the top
performer last year in the
eight-county region, which
also includes Clarke, Jack-
son. Oconee, Oglethorpe,
Madison, Morgan and
Franklin counties.
It raised over $376,000
in the 2015 fundraising
campaign to help provide
help to area residents with
financial aid, education
al resources, health care
accessibility and other
social services.
“Every year it seems we
raise more and more,” Bar-
row advisory board mem
ber Joe Vogt of Solvay said.
“It’s gone up even through
difficult financial times
with the economy. We’re
really looking forward to
great things this year.”
Barrow has set a goal
United Way continued from 1A
of $385,000 this year, part
of the overall $2.5 million
goal for the eight-county
area.
“Your goal in Barrow is
something that is achiev
able, but you have to focus
on it,” Dooley said.
Companies and agen
cies in Barrow recognized
for their 2015 fundraising
included:
•Harrison Poultry
•Publix
•Chico’s
•Barrow County School
System
•Solvay
•Comcast
•Walmart

REIMAGINING
The Northeast Georgia
agency itself is rethinking
its approach to the cam
paign this year, new pres
ident and CEO Matthew
Purkey said Friday.
The theme of this year’s
campaign is “Reimagine,”
Purkey said, adding the
agency is focusing on more
data-driven measures to
ensure every dollar raised
provides the most help it
possibly can.
“We are focused on being
better.” Purkey said. “We
have focused on becom
ing the most efficient, most
effective organization we
possibly can become.
“This year, we’re asking
you to reimagine how your
organizations get involved
in the community and
reimagine what success
looks like in the commu
nity.”
After humoring the
crowd with a tale of how
she hitchhiked to a Geor-
gia-Alabama game in Tus
caloosa one year, Dooley
reminded everyone about
the positive results of
becoming involved with
the United Way campaign.
“The Bible says the
greatest of things is love,
and what could be greater
than helping people who
are in need in our commu
nity,” she said. “There are a
lot of rewards in volunteer
ing your service. It’s loving
each other and loving your
neighbor.”
