WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2016 BARROW NEWS-JOURNAL PAGE 11A Nimblewill Letter to the Editor As the road twisted and turned while rising up through the elevation of the tree-smothered mountain, I slowed the car and looked at the place so dear to my fami ly. A place where faith and calloused hands fought pov erty and pover ty gave birth to dreams and even tual escape. My ancestors sowed there so we could reap abundantly elsewhere. It is a simple two lane back road that joins today’s world to one I knew in yester years, the one place in my history I sometimes wish I could crawl back into and savor the gentleness and the time when everyone I loved was still alive. I was too young to realize that life could be cruel and lessons could be hard learned. Not much has changed. Of that I am glad. The road is still patched with ribbons of tar poured into cracks reminding me how it would melt in the hot July sun until it was soft and spongy. As my cousins and I walked barefooted toward the country store, I would sometimes stop and stick a toe into its softness and watch the indention it made. Those were the times when kids still pondered on the life around them and found adventure in mud pies and play games of pretend and dress up. The trees are bigger but still full and leafy. The water hole where we laughed and splashed remains untouched so I slowed the car to think of the six foot tall drain pipe that runs underneath the road where we would plop down in our inner tubes on one end and ride the shallow, streaming water over the ridged surface then shoot out the other side into the deeper end of the water. There are no develop ments, no subdivisions in this place called Nim blewill where families own farms and land stays mostly in the fam ilies from one genera tion to the next. The war had ended in Europe in 1945 and was soon to end in the Pacific before Amicalola EMC could get power lines into the community and the tiny, tin-roofed house of my grandparents. I am still amazed that America had been fighting a world war with two enemies in two regions of the world yet there were still many people without access to electricity. Once it arrived to my kinfolk in the mountains, it would mostly be a naked light bulb that hung down from the center of the room and was turned on and off by jerking a string. The little four-room humble abode of my grandparents, the one with a front porch that seemed to sigh with despair, was torn down long ago and replaced with a house trailer. Gone, too, is the bam and the snowball plant that sprouted up majes tically every spring in the completely dirt front yard that was swept, not mowed. It was just far enough away from the tall, stur dy pine trees to absorb sun and make my grand mother very proud. She had few things of real beauty so she always beamed with joy over the huge blossoms and offered a cutting to anyone who stopped to admire it. See Ronda on Page 14A Items available from Food Pantry are free Dear Editor: Thanks for the article Scott Thompson wrote on the “Food to Kids” program and fund-raiser. We’re all excited about the fundraiser to provide funds for this pro gram — it’s a great idea! The Barrow County Food Pantry is one of our ministries and has a number of food distribution programs throughout our county. As mentioned in the article, one of these is a voucher program in conjunction with the school system that helps families in need of extra food. Our kids’ nutrition is extremely vital to their optimum performance in their school work and other activities and we want to do what we can to help them succeed. The article stated that these vouchers allowing families to purchase food at our Food Pantry. Just for the record, I want all your readers to know there is no cost to these families to get this food. We never charge anyone for the food which comes from any of our programs; it is all free to all the recipients. All our food is either donated very gen erously by the community or we buy it. We are so blessed to be a part of a very compassionate community here in Bar- row County and appreciate everyone who helps us obtain food for our neighbors through monetary or food donations. Thanks again for highlighting this event. Sincerely. Gwen Hill, President Barrow Co. Cooperative Benevolence Ministries, Inc. Winder Young letter continued from 6A Apparently, the Democrats have no rule, because their chairman is running for office in November. Very convenient. I could not do it, even if our rules allowed it. On a personal note, I miss my Democrat friend. Mr. Bill Healan, Jr. He was a great help to me in the 1994 and 1996 elections (vote resolution boards), and he was valu able to understanding the local Barrow political scene and ways to do politics right. Though we were in different parties, he had my deep respect. For more information on the Barrow County Republican Party, check www. barrowgop.org. Campaign headquarters information is found on the “Events” page. Signs and stickers are available. R.S.V. Acts 2:44-45 A ristotle claimed that humans are political animals, meaning that we live in a political society or community, remarking further that only a beast or a god would live by himself away from others. One implication of this view is that our minds are part and parcel of the social fabric. Our minds develop socially, by being raised to speak a particular language in a particular culture. And we are literally connected to other people's brains in that the smile on our face will register in their brain and cause their brain to make them smile, and their smiles will have the same effect on us. We have been taught the message of individualism for so long that we don't often see the many ways in which we are connected. Our minds truly are social, think of how often we complete each other's sentences or feel each other's joys and sorrows. But, the philosophy of individualism emphasizes our separateness and makes us think that we can be just as fully human as distinct individuals, as we can when we are part of a larger group like a family or a society. Since we live in a world where it is possible to live alone, and more people are choosing to do so, it appears that at times we hold up the individual as more important than the collective.
