APALACHEE THEATRE PRESENTS ‘THE AMISH PROJECT’

Apalachee Theater to perform
‘The Amish Project’ Oct. 22-24
Rehearsals are underway for Apalachee
Theater’s One Act Play. “The Amish
Project.”
This is the first production in Apalachee
Theatre’s 2016-2017 season which con
tinues in January with a Neo-Futurist
production of “Too Much Light Makes
the Baby Go Blind.” followed by the
spring musical “Hairspray” and ending
the season with an original script based
on the children’s story “Anastasia,” a the
atre for young audiences.
“The Amish Project” in its entirety will
be performed on Apalachee’s own stage
three times; Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7:30
p.m., and the following Sunday and Mon
day. Oct. 23 and 24. at 3 p.m. and 6:30
p.m., respectively. Tickets are available
in advance for $8 and will be sold at the
door for $10. Tickets can be purchased
in the AHS front office, through the cast
and crew, or by emailing the director,
Susan Pierce, at susan.pierce@barrow.

Season passes, which are good for any
combination of five shows, are avail
able to those who wish to enjoy The
Apalachee Theater’s 2016-2017 season
to its fullest.
The cast will compete in the Region
One Act competition on October 15, at
Gainesville High School with this piece
about the 2006 shooting in a one-room
Amish schoolhouse. The tragedy in Lan
caster, Pennsylvania, left six young girls
aged six to thirteen dead and five wound
ed, but the Amish community didn’t let
the incident instill fear. Instead, they
shocked the English (non-Amish) com
munity and press with their attitudes and
actions of unconditional forgiveness and
grace.
This beautiful production is about
responding with compassion, and will
include the talent of Brittany Robinson,
Alyssa Bailey, Yanaisa Pena, Eric How-
ington, Ajanlei Lumpkin, Noah Eldredge,
Giovanni White and Hannah Jones and is
directed by Susan Pierce.
Please be advised that there is strong
language and sensitive and mature sub
ject matter in this play and children under
the age of 14 or anyone offended by this
should not attend.

Local square dance lessons offered
Modern Western square dance lessons
for beginners are offered at the YMCA
in Winder. The Jug Tavern Square Dance
Club will host dance lessons on Tues
day nights from 7:30-9:30 p.m., at the
YMCA at 50 Brad Akins Drive, Winder.
No YMCA membership is required and
no partner is required.
The first three lessons are free, with
donations appreciated afterwards. Square
dancing meets the physical education
requirements for home schooling.

This murder mystery
is based on a television
movie, and is being direct
ed by Terri Duffield with
Robbie Summerour as the
assistant director.
The play will open on
Friday, Oct. 21, and run
for two weekends. Fri
day and Saturday shows
start at 7:30 p.m., and the

Part of the proceeds
from this play will be
donated to Peace Place,
a local non-profit agency.
Peace Place is a shelter
for battered women and
children, and they are in
need of a lot of support
to help these victims of
violence.

SIMS ACADEMY AUTO TECHS
The Sims Academy Auto Techs made it to the semi-finals of the Quaker
State “Best in Class” competition, during their first time competing.
Students write (in essay form) what the competition means to them, and
what it would mean to win. The Sims Academy Auto Techs made it into the
semi-finals. The next phase was voting for the team and Sims Academy’s
team finished third in the Georgia market. The top five high schools across
the country that make it into the finals receive a used vehicle, a $2,000
gift card from Auto Zone and six weeks to repair the vehicle. The winning
team receives an all-expense paid trip to Texas, free tools, a cash prize
and an appearance on the cover of “Popular Mechanics.” “This is very big
news that for our first time entering we made it into the semi-finals,” said
Michelle Beck, Sims Academy automotice instructor. “Next year S.A.I.T
Auto Techs will win it all.”

Senior Center plans Charleston trip
Winder VFW Post 1187 sets Veterans’ Day race
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Winder
Post 1187, plans a 5K run through beau
tiful downtown Winder to honor veterans
on Saturday, Nov. 5, starting at the Bar-
row County Chamber of Commerce.
The race will be held on a USATF
certified course and is a Peachtree Road
Race Qualifier.
The course is USATF certified.
The registration fee is $30. Female
veterans and members of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars and Auxiliary will receive a
$5 discount with coupon code, SERVED-
TOO & VFW5K, respectively. Race day
registration and check-in will open at 6
a.m.
The race starts at 8 a.m. For more

The Barrow County Senior Center is
offering a three-day trip to Charleston, S.C.
on December 7-9 The trip is open to those
50-and-older.
The trip includes a Christmas show and
Holiday Festival of Lights Tours.

occupancy.

Winder Spooktacular scheduled Oct. 28
The 2016 Halloween Spooktacular will be Friday, Oct. 28, at Jug Tavern Park from
5-11 p.m.
There will be street closures on East Athens Street from North Broad Street to Mill
Street, city officials said.
