BCES ready for ‘Fire
Prevention Week’
Oct. 9-15 marks the annual “National Lire Prevention
Week” and Barrow County Emergency Services will be
working hard to inform citizens on how to prevent fires.
“We will spend a lot of time in the elementary schools
here in Barrow County working with the students to teach
them about fire safety,” stated Captain Scott Dakin.
“This will occur all month long along with numerous
other education opportunities. We want our citizens to
be as safe as possible and to prevent fires from occurring
whenever possible.”
This year the theme of “Lire Prevention Week” is
“Don't Wait-Check The Date. Replace Smoke Alarms
Every 10 Years.”
We encourage citizens to check the date of manufacture
of their smoke alarm and if it is over 10 years old they
need to replace the smoke alarms.
This is the third year that the theme has focused on
smoke alarms.
This is because a National Fire Protection Agency's sur
vey data shows that the public has many misconceptions
about smoke alarms, which may put them at increased risk
in the event of a home fire.
For example, only a small percentage of people know
how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need
to be replaced.
Firefighters with Barrow County Emergency Services
go to all Barrow County School Systems elementary
schools each year to teach the students fire safety.
This helps the students learn at an early age what they
can do to prevent fires and be safe near fires.
“We also host different station tours where we educate
the visitors,” say leaders.
The department will also speak at different organiza
tions to educate as many citizens as possible on fire safety
and prevention.
“While Oct. 9-15 is the official ‘Fire Prevention Week,’
Barrow County Emergency Services uses opportunities
all year long to educate our citizens,” Captain Dakin said.
“Preventing a fire from occurring in the first place is the
best way firefighters can do their jobs.”
The department will also be placing safety messages up
throughout the month on the Barrow County Emergency
Services Facebook and Twitter pages in order to reach as
many citizens as possible.
