Spotlight on Braselton Antique and Arts festival
Turner: A longtime ‘jewel’ at Braselton festival
Festival duo
Debbie Turner and Gary Sherwood are no
strangers to the Braselton Antique and
Arts festival. The duo has been participat
ing in the festival for many years.
Vintage jewelry among display
Debbie Turner will be bringing several pieces of
vintage jewelry to the Braselton Antique and Arts
Festival on Oct. 21-23.
By Alex Pace
A long-standing hobby has
turned into a career for Debbie
Turner.
Turner started collecting
antiques and vintage jewelry
35 years ago. Her hobby quick
ly grew into a business which
enabled her to stay at home and
raise her two sons. Now, collect
ing and repurposing old pieces
has become her livelihood and
her passion.
“I fell in love with old items,”
she said.
Turner said she’s drawn to old
fumiUtre and unique items, along
with vintage jewelry. She enjoys
repurposing the jewelry, but if the
pieces are good quality, she leaves
them as is.
Turner and Gary Sherwood will
set up their Turner’s Treasures
booth at the upcoming Braselton
Antique and Artisan Festival on
Oct. 21-23. It’s a familiar sight to
the duo. They’ve been setting up
their tent at Braselton’s festival
for over 10 years in the same spot
by one of the large trees in Bra
selton Park.
Their booth will feaUtre a vari
ety of items including vintage.
sterling silver jewelry, and
repurposed jewelry; Christmas
items; primitive metal pieces;
fumitore; collectibles; and a
line of handmade leather and
cowhide purses. Turner also
has a booth inside Country
side Antiques with pottery, fur
niture, collectibles and other
items.
Turner has watched the festi
val grow over the years under
the leadership of Donna Can-
nella and Peggy Kriegel. The
festival started with approx
imately 30 vendors, but has
since grown to 180.
“Donna has just done a
fantastic job with the growth
of this festival,” said Turner.
“She’s brought in creative peo
ple and hand-chooses a lot of
the artisans. It’s grown into
something fantastic.”
Turner said she looks forward
to the new additions and fea
tures at the festival. But she said
what she enjoys most is meeting
the attendees and other artists.
She said she also likes looking at
the creative projects other artisans
develop.
The festival will feature 13
food trucks, a kids’ zone and live
music, in addition to the variety
of vendor booths that will line the
streets.
The Braselton Antique and Arti
san Festival will open on Friday,
Oct. 21, from 2-7 p.m.; Saturday,
Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.;
and on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be over 150 ven
dors lining the streets of Bra
selton for the 13th semi-annu
al Antique and Artisan Festival.
Vendors will have vintage items,
antiques, repurposed, farmhouse.

Road work has started in Braselton.
After two delays, construction started on
Monday on State Route 53 just south of State
Route 124 to install a new cross-draining
pipe.
The Georgia Department of Transportation
completed the project earlier this week.
Work has also started on repairs to the Jesse
Cronic Road bridge. One lane of 1-85 South
was closed earlier this week to allow the
GDOT to assess damage to the bridge.
The bridge’s steel beams were damaged
earlier in the month and this lane closure will
allow the preliminary steps to getting it fixed.

R.S.V. Acts 2:44-45
A ristotle claimed that humans are
political animals, meaning that we
live in a political society or
community, remarking further that only a
beast or a god would live by himself
away from others. One implication of
this view is that our minds are part
and parcel of the social fabric. Our
minds develop socially, by being
raised to speak a particular language
in a particular culture. And we are
literally connected to other people's
brains in that the smile on our face will
register in their brain and cause their brain
to make them smile, and their smiles will
have the same effect on us. We have been
taught the message of individualism for so
long that we don't often see the many ways
in which we are connected. Our minds truly
are social, think of how often we complete
each other's sentences or feel each other's
joys and sorrows. But, the philosophy of
individualism emphasizes our separateness
and makes us think that we can be just as
fully human as distinct individuals, as we
can when we are part of a larger group like
a family or a society. Since we live in a
world where it is possible to live alone, and
more people are choosing to do so, it
appears that at times we hold up the
individual as more important than the
collective.
