RUNNING FOR DAYLIGHT

this season. Photo by Jessica Brown
AHS continued from IB
gled to score consistently
and has put up more than
14 points just twice this
season.
“Right now, we’re just
not where we need to be
in order to go outscore a
team like Gainesville,”
Sims said.
“So our defense is really
going to have to step up,
make some big plays and
contain them. We need to
try to hold on to the ball
offensively, not turn it over
and control the clock.
“Hopefully, we can keep
it a close ballgame going
into the fourth quarter.
That would give us a shot
at it.”
Bulldoggs continued from IB
just as, if not more, desper
ate as they come in need
ing a victory to stay in the
hunt.
“It’s obviously a big
game because they’re in
the same boat.” Webb said.
“Everybody’s goal is to get
into the tournament, so we
know we’re going to see
their best.”
Leading the Lani
er attack is 6-foot, 210-
pound senior running back
Michael Babers, who has
rushed for over 500 yards
and averaged nearly six
yards per carry.
“He’s a big. physical
runner — probably the
biggest we’ve seen this
year,” Webb said.
“If he gets going good
downhill, he’s really tough
to tackle. And they do a
great job at the line of
scrimmage. They’ve got
big, strong, physical kids
and are pretty solid across
the board.”
The Bulldoggs will be
aiming to assert their own
offensive prowess a week
after totaling nearly 300
yards but only reaching
the end zone once against
Gainesville.
They’ll have to do so
against a Raider defense
that only gave up three
points to region co-leader
Dacula’s offense in a 9-0
loss last week. Dacula’s
only touchdown came off
a blocked punt that was
returned for a score.
“There’s not really a
standout player (on the
Habersham defense) you
can point to, but they just
play so well as a unit.”
Webb said. “They’re
tough, stingy and run to
the ball really well, which
is probably their strength.
They don’t give up a lot of
big plays so we’ve got to
play pretty well.
“We certainly know
they’ll execute so there’s
going to be no room for
error for us.”
Friday’s game will be
Senior Night for the Bull
doggs, which Webb said
should only add to the
sense of urgency surround
ing the contest.
“This could possibly be
the last time this season we
play in our stadium and our
seniors have to approach
it like it’s their last time
ever.” he said. “Hopefully
things go well.”
Knights continued from IB
But despite their three-game losing
streak, Fendley said the team is playing
with confidence. Their hunger, after all,
is what helped propel them to their first
playoff appearance.
“If I had to pinpoint one thing I really
like about our team, it’s their work ethic,”
Fendley said. “They come to work every
week ready to get after it. They’ve shown
a lot of resiliency, especially in September
when we had five games over a grueling
stretch. To be able to withstand that and
break even was good for our kids.
“It’s helped us get over the hump to
finally be able to say we made it. Now the
pressure is going to be even higher going
forward.”
Standing in BCA’s way this week is a
Frederica team that emerged on top in
a loaded Region 2, which also includes
perennial playoff teams Pinewood Chris
tian, Trinity Christian of Dublin and Bull
och Academy.
And like BCA, Frederica, a traditional
power in most GISA sports, is in just its
sixth season of football but it has already
experienced postseason success by win
ning a state championship in 2012.
“They’ve done a good job over the
years,” Fendley said. “The fact that they
came out on top of the region they were
in speaks very highly of them. They’re a
fantastic team.”
Frederica is averaging more than 32
points a game, while allowing just over 9.
The high-powered Frederica offense is
led by sophomore running back Jashawn
Sheffield, who has rushed for 651 yards
and averaged nearly 7 yards a carry.
“He’s as good as I’ve seen in a very long
time in GISA,” Fendley said of Sheffield.
“They’ve got other threats in the backfield,
but they’ll also spread you out on offense a
good bit. The quarterback throws the ball
very well and he runs it even better.”
Defensively, Fendley expects to see a
team that is similar to Loganville Christian
but will also blitz more.
“I think some of the same concepts we
were trying to guard against with LCA
will carry over Friday night,” he said.
“They’ve got a very good front seven and
have good size on them, so we’re going to
have to win the battle at the line of scrim
mage and try to open up some holes for
our running game.”
BCA might be the underdog, but the
Knights aren’t willing to go down quietly.
“The good thing about the playoff and
records is everyone is wiped clean,” Fend
ley said.
“We’re just trying to take it minute by
minute and figure out how we can have a
chance to come out on top.
“Anything can happen this time of year.
We’re going to work like crazy and see
what happens.”
