High School Football: Apalachee
Wildcats downed by Habersham in season finale
By Scott Thompson
Coach Steve Sims and
the Apalachee High School
football team had hopes of
ending the 2016 on a high
note last week at Habersh
am Central.
But ill-timed mistakes
and the inability to slow
a high-powered Raider
offense proved costly as
the Wildcats fell 49-21.
The Wildcats finished
the year 2-7-1 overall and
at the bottom of the GHSA
Region 8-AAAAAA
standings with an 0-5
mark.
“We just did not play
well defensively, and they
played very well offen
sively,” Sims said. “The
last thing we wanted to
do was get in a shootout
with somebody, but we just
couldn’t slow them down
at all. especially in the sec
ond half.
Apalachee was final
ly able to generate some
offense, particularly on the
ground, over the course
of the night. Tailback A.J.
Jones ran for 90 yards
while fullback Lorenzo
Stevenson tallied 80 and a
touchdown.
A 5-yard touchdown
pass from Ryan Mill
er to Ethan Morris and a
12-yard run by Stevenson
had the Wildcats down just
21-14 at halftime.
“We felt like we had
them where we wanted
them and if we could get
a few stops, we could have
a chance,” Sims said. “But
then we had a bad third
quarter.”

Game continued from 2B
eight minutes off the clock
on its opening possession
and go up 28-14. The drive
was extended twice —
first on a fake punt by the
Raiders and then a fourth-
down offside penalty on
Apalachee — and led
to the touchdown, which
proved to be the turning
point.
On the ensuing posses
sion, Miller was picked off
by a Habersham defender
deep in Wildcat territory,
and the Raiders capitalized
on the turnover to extend
the cushion to 35-14.
Apalachee scored its
final touchdown in the
fourth on a 5-yard pass
from Miller to A.J. Mid-
dlebrooks to make it 35-21,
but the Raiders responded
with two more scores to
complete the rout.
“I think our offensive
line had its best night all
year and blocked really
well,” Sims said. “I was
proud of the kids for hang
ing in there, playing hard
and showing a lot of effort.
We just gave up a few too
many plays and couldn’t
slow them down enough.”

the second half while the
Bulldoggs never got close
again.
“We thought we really
had the momentum and
had found something, but
then (failing to score the
game-tying touchdown)
totally squashed it,” Wind
er-Barrow coach Heath
Webb said.
The Bulldoggs finished
with 317 yards of offense,
including 157 passing
yards from Landis. But
that was no match for the
Falcons who have been a
buzzsaw in recent weeks,
recovering from a 1-4 start
to run the table in region
play.
Dacula finished with 449
yards of its own. with 305
of that total coming on the
ground.
Tre McMillan led the
way with 106 yards on 15
carries, including a 6-yard
touchdown scamper in
the fourth quarter and a
73-yard gallop that set up
the Falcons’ first touch
down of the night.
William Stovall. Ty Har
ris and Jalen Perry added
touchdown runs of 6, 2
and 92 yards, respectively
and Buckingham finished
with 144 passing yards and
a pair of scores — both to
Severe.
“They showed tonight
that they are a very good
and dangerous football
team,” Webb said of the
Falcons. “We knew it was
going to be a very tough
matchup for us. particu
larly against their offen
sive and defensive lines.
Ultimately, they just out-
manned and overpowered
us.”
Things won’t get any
easier next week when the
Bulldoggs face the unde
feated Catamounts, but
Friday did serve as useful
preparation for what the
atmosphere in Dalton will
be like, Webb said.
“I was proud of our kids
for continuing to fight
tonight,” he said. “We’ve
got a bunch of kids who
aren’t going to back down
from anyone. It’s going to
be a really stiff challenge,
but I promise you there
will be a bunch of Bull
doggs who will show up
and compete for four quar
ters.”
