High School Baseball: Winder-Barrow
Fulfilling their dreams
EVEN MORE PLAYING DAYS AHEAD
Winder-Barrow High School’s baseball team had four rising seniors sign college scholarships last week. From left to right: pitcher/infielder Will Hardigree
signed with USC Upstate; infielder Trent Maddox signed with Augusta University; catcher Beau Hanna signed with Kennesaw State; and outfielder Pat
Demarco signed with Vanderbilt. All four are returning from a team that reached the GHSA Class AAAAA Elite Eight last season. Submitted photo
4 Diamond Doggs sign college scholarships

The dreams of Pat Demarco,
Beau Hanna. Trent Maddox and
Will Hardigree aren't that dif
ferent from many high school
baseball players.
They all want to win a champi
onship and play at a higher level
— college and even the pros.
While the quartet of Wind
er-Barrow Bulldoggs have some
work to do before potentially
being drafted, the college part is
taken care of if they choose to
follow that path.
The four seniors signed college
scholarships on Nov. 9 during
a ceremony in the school cafe
teria — Demarco with Vander
bilt, Hanna with Kennesaw State,
Maddox with Augusta University
and Hardigree with the Universi
ty of South Carolina Upstate.
All four were key contribu
tors for the 2016 Diamond
‘Doggs squad that went 25-7
and advanced all the way to
the GHSA Class AAAAA Elite
Eight before falling to South Eff
ingham.
Demarco, an outfielder, led the
way, hitting .450 with 14 home
runs, driving in 47 runs and scor
ing 49 runs. He also recorded 14
doubles. The offensive explosion
earned him a first-team selection
on the Georgia Dugout Club all-
state team and Player of the Year
honors for Region 8-AAAAA
and the Athens Banner-Herald.
“Vanderbilt is a very presti
gious school and to be able to go
somewhere of that caliber, both
with baseball and academics, is
a blessing,” said Demarco, who
could very well find himself high
up on Major League teams' draft
boards in the spring.
“It’s always exciting to think
about, but you can't really let it
get into your head or think about
it too much because you still
have to train and stay humble.
You have to put your head down
and work hard, and if the time
comes, it will be a lot of fun.”

High School Softball: Winder-Barrow
Nugue, Johnson sign on with college programs
By Scott Tkompson

For the past four years,
Cathleen Nugue and Ans-
ley Johnson were main
stays in the Winder-Bar
row High School softball
team’s starting lineup,
including a trip to the Elite
Eight in Columbus when
they were freshmen.
While their careers with
the Bulldoggs ended last
month, their playing days
have not.
The two officially agreed
to continue their playing
careers Thursday as Nugue
signed with Georgia Mili
tary College and Johnson
signed with Young Harris
College during a ceremony
in the school cafeteria.
“I feel really lucky
because I know a lot of
people would love to
have this opportunity and
I’ve gotten it twice,” said
Nugue, who started at
shortstop for the Bulldoggs
the past four seasons.
Johnson, who started at
third base as a freshman,
eventually moved to catch
er and played other posi
tions as well.
She started behind the
plate again for the Bull
doggs this season as they
finished the year 13-17 and
lost to Harrison in the first
round of the GHSA Class
AAAAAA playoffs.
“It's just really excit
ing to know I'm going to
be playing softball at the
next level and that I'll be
playing against friends and
people I know.” Johnson
said.
“We’ve made a lot of
memories together that
we'll never forget. It’s
been a lot of fun.”
Winder-Barrow coach
Monty McClure said he
was sad to see Nugue and
Johnson leaving the pro
gram but excited for them
to get the opportunity to
continue their careers.
“Any time you have girls
with the goal of playing
at the next level and they
actually achieve it, there's
some gratification there
in helping them along
the way,” McClure said.
“Both of them have real
ly progressed as players.
They just have good work
ethic and are competitive
girls.
“They love to play soft-
ball and now they get the
opportunity to go to col
lege for free and come out
with no debt because of
our great game of softball.
“They deserve it and
I look forward to them
doing well over the next
few years.”

as had never had a player of
his sign a college scholarship.
So when Bulldogg senior
Lexi Maddox recently inked
with the College of Charles
ton, it gave him a proud feel
ing.
Thomas, his players and
assistant coaches, school
administrators and Maddox’s
family and Mends were on
hand Monday during a cere
mony honoring her decision to
play for the Cougars.
Maddox had previously
signed the official paperwork.
“College is expensive and
when someone offers to pay
for it and let you play the game
you love, it doesn’t get much
better than that,” Thomas said.
