Some advice: Pitch the poinsettia, keep the cactus this holiday season
Every holiday season I
see instructions for how to
keep gifted poin-
settias through
out the year and
to get them to
bloom again next
year.
Poinsettias are
a short-day plant,
meaning that they
require a certain
dark period daily
to bloom again.
This involves the
tedious process
of moving your
poinsettia in and out of
closets daily for eight to
10 weeks during the holi
day season.
For most of us, that is
just not going to happen.
Pitch it.
I know for some of you
throwing out live plants
hurts your soul.
If that is the case, give
it to a horticultural enthu
siast with an empty clos
et and extra time on their
hands.
Or do what I do, and
get someone else (my hus
band) to toss it in the com
post heap when you aren’t
looking.
There will be
no scarcity of
poinsettias next
year, and for
many school
agriculture edu
cation programs
like the one at
Sims Academy,
selling poinset
tias is an import
ant fundraiser.
On the other
hand, keep the
Christmas cactus.
I was never a fan of
Christmas cacti until I
saw my mother-in-law’s.
While I always thought
they were pretty, in stores
they seemed small and less
impressive than popular
poinsettias.
However, they get better
with age.
My mother-in-law’s is
three feet in diameter and
looks like a cheery blazing
fire when in bloom, and is
really quit breath-taking.
It is a part of holiday
decor that I always look
forward to seeing.
To care for your Christ
mas cactus, remove the
faded flowers, re-pot it,
and place it in a sunny
window after the holiday
season.
Once all chance of frost
has gone, you can take it
to a shady spot outside.
Once it begins to get cool
again, bring it back inside.
It needs to be somewhere
that gets 12-14 hours of
uninterrupted dark at night,
with cooler temperatures
at night, and approximate
ly 10 degrees warmer in
the day.
Just make sure that once
you find your spot, you
leave it there.
While this may seem
technical, usually putting
it in a sunny window will
meet your cacti’s needs,
and it will bloom again
just in time for the holiday
season.
For more detailed infor
mation about caring for
Christmas cacti, or if you
really want to, poinsettias.

DENTISTS MAKE FOOD 2 KIDS DONATION
Drs. Robert Stansell and Lewis Petree, Stansell & Petree Family Dentistry,
Winder, made a donation to the Barrow Food 2 Kids program recently in
honor of 12 dental specialists they work with throughout the year. “We appre
ciate this thoughtful donation in honor of several dental professionals, which
will provide weekend meals to Barrow students struggling with hunger and
food insecurity. The Food 2 Kids program helps close the hunger gap by pro
viding children with the most essential school supply, which is food,” said
Shannon Derrick, Barrow County School System Food 2 Kids Coordinator.
