100-yard freestyle and
sixth in the 200-yard free
style, setting a personal
best and school record in
both events. Winder-Bar
row’s 200-yard freestyle
relay team of Bijon Man-
sour, Daniel Mcllwain,
Jack McDaniels and Hen-
tenaar swam to a 19th
place finish. Overall, the
Swim Doggs tied for 26th
place out of 126 schools
which were represented in
the Class A-AAAAA divi
sion.
•Winder-Barrow High
School assistant principal
and athletic director Rob
McFerrin was named the
2016 Region 8-AAAAA
Athletic Director of the
Year after every fall sport
at Winder-Barrow High
School advanced to the
state level of competition
in the fall of 2015.
March
•An incredible postsea
son run reached a heart
breaking conclusion on
March 4 as the Wind
er-Barrow girls basketball
team lost to Southwest
DeKalb 49-48 in the Class
AAAAA championship
game in Macon. Olivia
Nelson-Ododa finished
with 13 points and had an
impressive 19 rebounds.
Lattice Perkins added 11
points while Tiera May-
weather also finished in
double figures with 10
points. Lexi Maddox added
7 points for the Lady Bull
doggs and Chellia Watson
finished with 6. The Lady
Bulldoggs finished the sea
son 26-7.
However, Peacock battled
back to tie the second set
5-all before Hagan eventu
ally prevailed 7-5 to com
plete his undefeated season
and secure the first region
championship for the Wild
cats. Apalachee was later
upset by South Paulding
in the first round of the
state playoffs while Wind
er-Barrow reached the sec
ond round before falling to
Stan's Mill.
May
•On May 10, the Wind-
er-Banow baseball team
was swept by South Eff
ingham in the GHSA Class
AAAAA quarterfinals,
bringing to an end a solid,
25-7 campaign. Victory
was within reach in both
games against the Mus
tangs. In the opener, the
Diamond Doggs moved in
front 7-1 before South Eff
ingham mounted a furious
comeback in the bottom
of the fifth inning, scor
ing nine runs while send
ing 14 batters to the plate.
In the second game, the
Bulldoggs led 3-0 before
the Mustangs began chip
ping away at the advan
tage. South Effingham took
a 5-3 lead into the bottom
of the seventh in game two
and held off one final rally
attempt by Winder-Barrow.
•Winder-Barrow senior
track and field standout
Briana Sims finished third
in the Class AAAAA shot
put and discus at the GHSA
state meet in Albany. Sims’
best throw at state in the
shot put was 40-10 while
her mark of 129-9 in the
discus was also good
enough for a third-place
medal. Sims previously
won state sectionals in the
discus, throwing 124-01,
while finishing as Region
8-AAAAA runner-up in
the shot put with a throw
of 42-04.24.
June
•Winder-Barrow girls
basketball standout Oliv
ia Nelson-Ododa was
named to USA Basket
ball’s women’s 2016 U-17
world championship team.
She was one of 12 players
picked out of 139 who tried
out.
July
•While the Barrow
County 10U all-star soft-
ball team reached the
Dizzy Dean World Series
in Mississippi, finishing
3-2 in the tournament.
August
•With a new school year,
a new sports season opened
as the football, softball
and volleyball teams at
Apalachee, BCA and
Winder-Barrow kicked off
their 2016 schedules.
September
•On Sept. 23, the Beth
lehem Christian Academy
football team dismantled
Dominion Christian 53-0,
all but locking up a state
playoff berth — the first in
school history. The Knights
would go on to finish the
season at 4-7, falling to
Frederica Academy 52-14
in the first round of the
GISA Class AAA playoffs.
•In both teams’ region
football opener on Sept.
30, Winder-Barrow won
the latest installment of
the “Battle of Barrow’
with a 28-21 victory over
Apalachee. Bulldogg soph
omore Jamar Mack rushed
for 138 yards on 23 car
ries, after taking over for an
injured Javonne Hughes, to
lead the way. The game
was tied 14-14 at halftime
and it appeared AHS would
take a lead after Will Smith
intercepted a pass and
returned it to the WBHS
12-yard line. A 34-yard
field goal failed, however,
to leave the game tied. The
Bulldoggs then marched 80
yards capped by a 1-yard
run by Nathan Millwood.

Landis had connected with
Latrell Scott on a 33-yard
hookup on the previous
play to set up the score.
October
•On Oct. 7, Winder-Bar
row celebrated its 50th sea
son at W. Clair Harris Sta
dium. The Bulldoggs lost
34-21 to Lanier in a Region
8-AAAAAA battle.
•On Oct. 8, the Wind
er-Barrow volleyball
team captured the Area
8-AAAAAA champion
ship, defeating Habersham
Central and avenging a
loss to the Raiders earlier
in the tournament. Wind
er-Barrow would go on
to advance to the second
round of the state play
offs before losing to Johns
Creek.
November
•Winder-Barrow senior
girls cross country runner
Micah Weathers turned
in a huge performance on
Nov. 5, finishing fourth out
of 213 competitors in the
GHSA Class AAAAAA
meet in Carrollton. Weath
ers, who was second in
the Region 8-AAAAAA
meet a week earlier, ran the
5K race in 20:00.12 and
helped fuel a 12th-place
overall finish by the Bull
doggs out of the 30 teams
that competed. Sophomore
Kacie Wilson also logged
a top-20 time for Wind
er-Barrow, finishing 12th
(20:29.80).
•After reaching the state
playoffs for a school-record
third consecutive season,
the Winder-Barrow foot
ball team saw its year draw
to a close with a 42-7 at
top-ranked Dalton. Junior
quarterback JP Tighe led
the way for Dalton, throw
ing for 139 yards and two
touchdowns and running
for another score. Senior
running back Ahmmad
Tanner ran for 99 yards
on 17 carries and a pair of
first-quarter touchdowns.
Winder-Barrow junior

finished 18-of-27 for 162
yards passing and scored
on a 14-yard rush midway
through the third quarter.
December
•Former longtime
Winder-Barrow track and
field coach Cook Holliday
broke the pole vault record
for the 70-74-year-old age
group to earn a gold medal
and all-American status at
the Florida Senior Olym
pic Games Dec. 10-11 in
Clearwater. Holliday also
earned a silver medal in
the javelin and a bronze
in the discus throw while
competing in the high
jump as well. Holliday’s
performance followed a
dominant showing in July
when he won six gold
medals at the Georgia
Games at Marietta High
School. He now turns his
focus to the USA Track
and Field national mas
ters championships, which
will be held in June, with a
chance to go to the world
championships later in the
year.

•On April 14, the
Apalachee High School
boys tennis team nipped
Winder-Barrow 3-2 to cap
ture its first region cham
pionship. Winder-Barrow’s
No. 1 doubles team of Bai
ley Brock and Jacob Lyle
were first off the courts
after posting a quick 6-1,
6- 0 win over Trey and
Davis Hayes to give the Net
Doggs an early 1-0 lead.
The lead proved short-lived
as moments later Chandler
Hagan dispatched Michael
Colosimo 6-2, 6-0 at No.
1 singles to knot the match
1-all. The Net Doggs
nudged ahead when the
No. 2 doubles team of Isaac
Johnson and Jackson Scott
defeated Luke Woschitz
and Smiley Marlowe 6-2,
7- 5, but Apalachee’s Chris
tian Perez knocked off Nic
Tally 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 sin
gles to again tie the match

to Eli Hagan and Gable
Peacock at No. 2 singles in
a match that would deter

on. Hagan, who entered
with a perfect 18-0 mark
on the season for the Wild
cats, won the first set easily
6-1 and held a comfort
