considers Trump an “illegitimate” presi
dent over concerns about Russian influ
ence on the election.
Republican Gwinnett County Commis
sioner Tommy Hunter fanned more flames
Monday when he labeled Lewis a “racist
pig.”
“We have a gentleman who won the
election by instilling fear,” Johnson said
of Trump. “If Dr. King were here today,
he would tell President-elect Trump that
while he’s in D.C. moving in, he should
take some time and go over to the Afri
can-American history museum and visit
the John Lewis section. The man was
beaten and bled. He walks around today
with a metal plate in his head because he
was fighting not only to end segregation,
but for people’s right to vote.
“Donald Tmmp is going to be our next
president and we have to give him a
chance. But when you start to attack Con
gressman Lewis and question if he’s a man
of action, we cannot sit silently but we
must respond in a peaceful, loving way.”
Johnson, an Athens native, campaign
strategist, political commentator and direc
tor at an Atlanta law firm, highlighted
Monday’s celebration in Winder, which
also included a one-block march and a lull
ceremony.
He called for improved race relations
across the U.S. and echoed the message
of King’s daughter, Bernice, at a Monday
ceremony at Ebenezer Baptist Church in
Atlanta.
“Do not get weary. Do not get angry. Do
not get bitter,” he said. “Hold your elected
officials accountable.”
Johnson and other speakers also directly
addressed younger generations and decried
issues of black-on-black crime.
Eighty-eight-year-old Jim Bryant, who
often dresses as Frederick Douglas during
Black History Month every February to
teach children, said not enough younger
Americans know their history.
He also relayed the story of growing up
in Pennsylvania after moving there from
his native South Carolina and still facing
discrimination.
“You’ve got some good things going
now," Bryant said. “Stop messing up, rob
bing, stealing and knocking each other
over the head.”
But Johnson, 38, said older generations
should also work to bridge gaps with the
younger ones.
“We need to meet our young people
where they are,” he said. “Trying to tell
them they’re not doing right because they
were not raised the way you were is not
going to work with all of them. Take some
time out and listen to the music they listen
to.
“Some of it is bad but some of it is not.
Explain to them it’s just entertainment,
not reality; that they’re now listening to
the voice of a young man who grew up
in the housing projects of Athens, worked
his way through high school and went to
Clarke Atlanta University; and now can
literally call any elected official in the state
of Georgia and have them return the call;
who goes on national television and con
veys the Democratic message.
“You’ve got to show them there’s anoth
er way.”

Random Rants in Rhyme
Confirmation
dr.
cb
skelton
In life, we sometimes reach a station
where we don’t know which way to go.
We stand in need of confirmation
so we can know in our hearts that we know
the path that we must choose and travel
as we journey to the next level.
Early in my teenage years,
I reached the point where I had to decide
to press for my goal, in spite of fears,
or simply let that great dream slide.
From a totally unexpected station,
I received my confirmation.
“Uncle” Pitt Griggs was a black man
(excessively fond of alcohol)
who seemed to have no great life plan
other than simple fol-de-rol.
One day. the two of us worked together
because it was inclement weather.
I don’t remember the words I said
more than seventy-five years ago;
but I remember those “letters in red”
that set my teenaged heart aglow.
“Uncle” Pitt smiled a toothy smile,
said, “Mistah Cha’les, you wuffwhile!”
I don’t know why those were words that I needed
to ready me for life’s hectic race.
I know that now. when my life’s near completed,
those words seem to hold an important place.
So now, in that type of situation.
I love to give young folks words of confirmation.
Whenever you have opportunity
to advise some young person on life’s road
who wonders and worries if he or she
is able to carry life’s heavy load;
just reach out and touch them, and say with a smile,
“Both God and I think that you are worthwhile!”
