Wildcats open region tournament
today against third-seeded Dacula
The Apalachee girls basketball team is
hoping lightning will strike twice tonight
as it visits Dacula with a state playoff
berth on the line.
The sixth-seeded Lady Wildcats will
face the third-seeded Lady Falcons at
7:30 p.m. in the first round of the GHSA
Region 8-AAAAAA tournament. The
winner advances to face Gainesville in the
region semifinals Friday at Apalachee and
is guaranteed a spot in the state playoffs.
It would be the Lady Wildcats’ first state
playoff appearance in school history.
Apalachee (6-18,1-9 region) got its lone
region victory against the Lady Falcons in
a 29-21 defensive struggle at Dacula on
Jan. 25.
Apalachee wrapped up its regular sea
son Friday night with a 75-52 home loss
to Gainesville.

ONE MORE TUNEUP

Knights, Lady Knights set to dose
out regular season Thursday night

Late in a year where not much has
gone the way of the Bethlehem Chris
tian Academy boys basketball team,
Knights coach Mike Elmankabady said
the trick is keeping his team motivated
and buying into the chance their for
tunes could turn.
That likely won’t be a problem Thurs
day as the Knights close out their regu
lar season at Dominion Christian in a
GISA Region 1-AAA contest.
In the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 27
at BCA, Dominion overcame a 13-point
second-half deficit to win 55-51.
The winner of the game will be the
fifth seed in next week’s region tourna
ment while the loser will be the sixth
seed.
“Our guys took that one pretty per
sonally.” Elmankabady said of the
blown lead and loss against Dominion
last month. “We’ve got three days this
week to practice and prepare. So hope
fully we’ll be well rested and prepared
come Thursday.”
BCA’s latest outing was a 65-39 lead
at rival Loganville Christian. The Lions
used an aggressive and pressing defense
early to jump out to a quick 16-2 lead
and kept rolling from there.
The Knights (4-15,0-9 region) cut the
lead down to single digits in the second
quarter, but got into foul trouble as all
five of their starters had at least two
fouls before the half.
“We made mistake after mistake
and things kept compounding on us,”
Elmankabady said. “We felt like we
were in there and competing and then
you look up at the scoreboard and we
were somehow out of it. Our guys
fought hard. They just outclassed us.”
The Knights will open the region
tournament at Loganville Christian on
Tuesday against either LCA or Trinity
Christian, Sharpsburg. That game will
be played at either 7 p.m. or 8:30 p.m.
With a win in the first round of the six-
team tournament, the Knights would
clinch a state playoff berth.
“That’s the beauty of tournament bas
ketball,” Elmankabady said. “You just
throw the records all out and win and
you’re in. That’s what we have to be
aiming for now.”
The BCA Lady Knights defeated
Loganville Christian and are 7-12 over
all and 3-6 in the region heading into
Thursday’s game.
High School Tennis: Winder-Barrow
Net Dogg teams return experienced rosters for 2017
By David Brock
Sports Correspondent
New seasons bring fresh
starts and new faces, and
for the Winder-Barrow
Net Doggs it also brings a
renewed sense of optimism
as they open the 2017 sea
son.
Following a success
ful two-year run by Alan
Farmer which included a
Sweet 16 appearance in
the GHSA Class AAAAA
playoffs last year, Michael
McDougald takes the reins
of the boys team and is
encouraged by what he
sees in early practices.
“I think we’ve got a
good shot here,” McDou
gald said. “We lost some
players and we’ve had
some players participating
in swimming so I hav
en’t seen them yet. but I
think we’re pretty strong
through about four or five
slots.”
The Doggs return a vet
eran core that includes last
season’s top two singles
players, Michael Colosi-
mo and Gable Peacock,
as well as senior Bailey
Brock, who is expected to
move into the singles line
up after garnering first-
team all-region honors last
year in doubles. Junior
Nic Tally also returns with
extensive singles and dou
bles experience.
The doubles slate, which
keyed the Doggs’ sec
ond-place region finish
and state tournament run
in 2016, was decimated by
graduation as three seniors
exhausted their eligibility.
McDougald will look to a
combination of newcom
ers to fill those slots.
McDougald, who enjoys
both teaching and play
ing the sport, may be
new to Winder-Barrow
but he brings a wealth
of tennis experience and
acumen. Following a suc
cessful high school career
as a player at Johnson of
Gainesville, McDougald
played collegiately for
Shorter College. He’s also
coached on the prep level
at Mill Creek and as a pri
vate instructor.
“I’m a strong believer in
work ethic and I'm a drill
in practice kind of guy,” he
said. “I like kids that come
out and work hard, play
hard, and don’t quit.”
Optimism also abounds
for the girls team as head
coach Heather Lundy
expects the squad to con
tend for a state playoff
berth.
“One of my main goals
is to get back to the state
playoffs and I’m super
excited about the season
this year,” Lundy said.
“We’ve got so much tal
ent. I’m stuck right now
because I have so many
players that are talented.
We have so much to get
done before our region
matches start to figure out
where our players fit.”
The Lady Doggs also
return an experienced ros
ter led by senior Kathryn
Faulkner, who anchored
the No. 1 singles position
last year. Other key return
ers include Scarlett Wood
ward and Lainey Finch in
singles and Anna Bass and
Rachel McCain in doubles.
But Lundy stressed that
the roster is so deep that no
position is a given.
“So many of our girls
took our advice and start
ed getting lessons,” Lundy
said. “They came back and
shocked some of those who
have been varsity players
for a couple of years, and
they could potentially be
losing their spots.”
While it doesn’t rival the
tennis boom of the ’70s,
a recent spike in interest
in the sport locally bodes
well for the future of the
Lady Doggs.
“Right now we’ve got
22 girls total in the pro
gram with 10 on varsity
and 12 on JV.” Lundy said.
“Of those on JV half are
eighth- and ninth-graders,
so we have a really good
group coming that’s going
to be able to replace those
that are graduating. Coach
Susan Mullis does a fan
tastic job with the kids
on the JV building their
confidence and having fun
with the sport, and they are
going out and furthering
their tennis abilities after
the season is over.”
