Apalachee’s Alexis Doherty finished 11th in the
50-yard freestyle and 37th in the 100-yard freestyle
last weekend.
Six local swimmers — one
from Apalachee and five from
Winder-Barrow — competed
last weekend in the GHSA
swimming and diving cham
pionships at Georgia Tech
and saw improvement from
previous performances.
In the Class AAAAAA
competition, Apalachee’s
Alexis Doherty finished 11th
in the 50-yard freestyle and
37th in the 100-yard freestyle.
Winder-Barrow also saw
some improvements, coach
it’s just a whole other level
where all the other kids
are as good and as strong
as you.”
For Winder-Barrow,
senior Cameron Best was
the lone qualifier, going
3-2 to finish seventh at
285.
Other Winder-Barrow
wrestlers who competed
in the sectionals includ
ed Dottin at 220, Mor
gan Bell (106), Jett Clack
(120), Justin Heuple (126),
Zach Thomas (132), Aaron
Fields (138) and Caleb
Charron (195).
‘‘We definitely would
have liked to have gotten a
couple more to state, but it
is what it is,” Winder-Bar
row coach Jim Stouden-
mire said. “Sometimes you
just run up against a brick
wall.
“We have several guys
who wrestled well. Some
of them were just outdone
by more talented guys and
there’s not a whole lot you
can do about that.”
Best will be making his
second trip to state after
also qualifying last year.
“That first time going
can be kind of a rude
awakening, but we’re hop
ing for a better trip this
Jennifer Chisholm said. The
400-yard freestyle relay team
of Bijon Mansour, Bailey
Brock. Spencer Smith and
Jack McDaniels swam 2.38
seconds faster than their pre
vious record and the 200-yard
freestyle relay team com
prised of the same four swam
.72 seconds faster.
Also, Madison Budrock
swam the 100-yard back-
stroke 1.51 seconds faster
than she had previously.
“Swimming faster than
you were entered is what state
is all about,” Chisholm said.
“It was a pretty good season.
“The kids improved the
whole way and that is all we
ask of them. All eight of our
seniors are honor graduates
with two in the top 10. That
is one of the most impressive
parts.”
Chisholm stepping down
Chisholm said this week
she will step down after 14
years of coaching the team
in order to focus more on her
family.
“I have an 11-year-old boy
who will be in middle school
and has not gotten to do so
much because of my swim
schedule,” Chisholm said.
“When my boy tells me
that he needs me, I don’t have
much of a choice.
“I was coaching a meet in
2006 at UGA and the next
day I was in the hospital for
him to be bom. It’s time to
focus on him!”
Wrestling continued from IB
time,” Stoudenmire said.
“He’s going in as a No. 7
which doesn’t help your
cause when you have to
start against a No. 2 from
the other sectional. But
when you get to this level,
that means you’re top 16
in your class and anything
can happen.
“We're hoping he can
pull out a win that first
match, and that will make
his bracket a whole lot eas
ier.”
Stoudenmire said over
all he was proud of his
team's performance this
year. Typical attrition led
to some vacancies in some
middle-weight classes that
hurt the Bulldoggs in the
dual portion of the sched
ule.
But, Stoudenmire said,
the future looks bright.
“We should have a
good bit of our core back
for another two or three
years,” he said. “It’s a
young group, but a tough
bunch of guys.
We’ll pick up a few
from the middle school to
help fill out the classes.
We hope we can see some
steady improvement team
wise.”

In Loving Memory
Huey L. Brock
4/10/30 - 2/14/16
We knew little that day
God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone;
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide;
And although we cannot see you,
You are always in our hearts.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same;
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
“Its been a year and we miss you so much,
we love you forever and always.”
