J.J. Frazier is a great Bulldog
It hurts to lose.
It especially hurts to lose
like Georgia lost to Ken
tucky last weekend.
The hurt is deep and
abiding when a deserving
coach has to believe that
the gods of fate have it in
for him.
When the agony of
defeat is stamped on J. J.
Frazier’s hopeful heart,
you consider life to be
unfair. It is doubtful that
any wearer of the Red and Black in
the history of Stegeman Coliseum
has had more heart that this 5-10,
155 pound package of brilliance.
He had come to the biggest home
game of the year, primed to play
his best, with measured
confidence that his
team could win out and
get to the big dance.
He and his team
believed. Even when
their inside man, their
big-time talent, NBA
worthy Yante Maten
went down with a knee
injury in the first two
minutes, they rendered
a classic performance,
only to be denied. The
ESPN announcers Dave O’Brien
and Dick Vitale said afterwards that
Georgia would have won if Maten
had played the game without that
untimely and unfortunate collision
early on. Mr. Inside to complement
loran
smith
the sensational Mr. Outside-surely
would have been enough.
If there were a thunderstorm and
lightning were dancing about, I
would not choose to stand by Mark
Fox. who has to be the unluckiest
coach in the game. He and his team
deserved better, but to whom do you
plea for mercy? Why could it not be
a solitary critical break at the most
critical of times —just one Wildcat
miss or one more trey stripping the
Bulldog nets?
Time spent with J. J. is blessed
time. He speaks with a joyful heart,
deflecting praise and giving thanks
to the Almighty and to his school
and to his family and to his team
mates. My turn now. God bless this
“Deserving Dawg.”
J. J. plays two feet taller than he
actually is and what greater glory
could have come to Ole Georgia if
his team could have persevered?
Enough, enough. Life must go
on, but let’s rejoice in that this
remarkable young man came our
way. He has been the responsible
student-athlete on pace to graduate
which means he is academically due
diligent but to his credit honesty
compels him to admit his class goals
are perfunctory.
He’d rather be shooting baskets
which he does as often as possible,
year round. The playgrounds in
Tattnall County were a joy to behold
in his youth. As were the high school
gyms. Then segueing into the courts
in the competitive Southeastern
Conference-life became a serendip
itous experience which he has never
taken for granted.
My mind’s eye “runneth over”
with J,J. scenes. His No. 30 cramped
onto his smallish frame.
His intense focus as he works
to make plays to give his team an
advantage. Always unselfish, he has
been known to dish olf a pass with
unintended sleight-of-hand action
that surprised unsuspecting team
mates.
With the same cogency, he often
burned the competition with a
theft here and there that left vic
tims sheepishly embarrassed. Never
intimidated, even by giant men who
were faked out of their shorts (I
