Dream season for Doggs comes to end
BRINGING THE HEAT
Winder-Barrow senior Will Hardigee had eight strikeouts to lead the Bulldoggs to a 7-3 win in game
one of a GHSA Class AAAAAA second-round playoff series against Richmond Hill on May 3. But the
Wildcats rallied for a 3-2 win game two the same day and a 7-2 victory in the third and deciding game
on Saturday to take the series. Photos by Jessica Brown

DIGGING IT OUT
Winder-Barrow senior first baseman Casey
Thurmond digs out a low throw from the dirt
during game one of the series. Thurmond, a
Georgia Highlands College signee, was one of
eight seniors on this year’s Bulldoggs squad that
set a school record for wins in a season with 30.
Bulldoggs continued from IB
error and Will McGrath was hit
by a pitch to extend Richmond
Hill’s lead to 5-2. The Wildcats
then added two more insurance
runs on a single by shortstop
Rick Mitchell. Richmond Hill
reliever Wesley Daniel gave up
a couple of base runners in the
bottom of the inning but got
Zack Smith to fly out and end
the game.
“We knew we had our hands
full coming into this series.
When we were able to split on
Wednesday night we knew we
had a chance,” Wildcats coach
Stacy Bennett said. “We came
out and competed. Our pitchers
pitched their tails off and gave
us a chance to win.
“Hats off to (Winder-Bar
row). This is my seventh year
coaching and Coach (Brian)
Smith has coached this game
a whole lot longer than I have
and has won a whole lot more
baseball games, and that’s the
best high school hitting team
that I’ve seen so far.”
Meanwhile, the loss marked
a premature end to the season
for the Bulldoggs (30-4), who
entered the series ranked No. 1
in AAAAAA and 11th nation
ally in the most recent Baseball
America top-25 poll.
“I’m very proud of our
team,” Brian Smith said. “All
year long these guys have
fought hard. They’re a tough
group. They played their hearts
out and they’ve done everything
I asked of them. This is the
most consistent group I’ve ever
dealt with.”
Zack Smith started the game
for Winder-Barrow and allowed
Richmond Hill to load the bases
twice in the first inning. But he
managed to only give up one
run off an RBI single by Gib
son. The Bulldoggs grabbed
the lead in the bottom of the
third when catcher Beau Hanna
hit a two-run home run (his
third of the series and seventh
on the year) to make it 2-1.
Smith’s performance began
to fall apart in the top of the
fifth, though, as Richmond Hill
scored one run on an error and
another on an RBI single by
Vaughn to regain the lead, 3-2.
In the bottom of the fifth,
the Bulldoggs looked primed
to take the lead back when they
loaded the bases. But Richmond
Hill reliever Mike Menhart
got Will Hardigree to ground
the ball to third and McGrath
threw home for the force-out to
end the inning. The Bulldoggs
stranded seven runners on the
base paths in the final three
innings without scoring. That
also proved to be a problem for
them Wednesday in the second
game of the series.
After Winder-Barrow took
an early 1-0 lead in the top
of the first, the Wildcats tied
it in the bottom of the inning
and then grabbed a 3-1 lead in
the second on an RBI double
by Mitchell and RBI single by
Braden Henle. Richmond Hill
sophomore hurler Finley kept
the score there for the next sev
eral innings, working his way
out of some jams along the
way.
Winder-Barrow, though,
mounted a comeback in the
seventh, scraping together three
infield hits along with a walk to
cut the deficit to 3-2 and load
the bases with no one out. But
Wildcat reliever Kasey Green
was unfazed. He induced two
consecutive groundballs to first
and Becker threw home for the
force out on both plays to protect
the lead. Then with a 1-2 count,
Daniel Buice hit a screaming
line drive that appeared des
tined for left field before Mitch
ell leaped and snagged it for the
final out, sending the Wildcats
racing toward him at short.
“We’re fortunate right there,”
Bennett said of the play after the
game-two win. “Our shortstop
climbed the ladder and made
a play. He hits it anywhere
else and that’s the tying and
go-ahead run. We knew they
were going to wake up eventu
ally but we came through.”
The series got off to a nice
start for the Bulldoggs, who
rode Hanna’s pair of two-run
homers to a comfortable win.
Hanna’s dingers in the first and
third innings put Winder-Bar
row up 4-0 early, but the Wild
cats bounced back with two in
the fourth on McGrath’s two-
run double. Winder-Barrow put
the game out of reach in the
bottom of the sixth.
After Hardigree reached on
an infield hit and Smith walked,
Casey Thurmond’s sacrifice
bunt was thrown into left field
by the pitcher Menhart, allow
ing both runners to score. A
bases-loaded walk to Trent
Maddox later in the inning
made it 7-2.
The Bulldoggs set a school
record for wins in a season this
spring, but the senior-laden
squad wound up short of its
ultimate goal — bringing the
program its first state cham
pionship since 1979 and third
overall.
“We got a little cold at the
plate and our defense left us
for a little bit too,” Brian Smith
said. “But again, I love this
team. They’re a tough group.
I’m sad to see the season end,
but I’m very proud of what
they’ve done and they’ll take
the lessons from this season
through the rest of their lives.”
