TOUGH LOSS
Apalachee’s Chris Godinez possesses the ball during Apalachee’s GHSA
Class AAAAAA second-round playoff match at Richmond Hill on May 3.
Apalachee lost 4-3 and a controversial goal by Richmond Hill with just under
16 minutes left proved to be the difference. Apalachee, which contended the
shot hit the side netting, submitted video to the GHSA, but the association
ruled the call of a goal was a judgment one. The Wildcats finished the season

Controversial goal pushes Richmond

RICHMOND HILL
— The Apalachee High
School boys soccer team
rallied from an early huge
deficit in its GHSA Class
AAAAAA second-round
playoff match May 3, but a
controversial goal by Rich
mond Hill proved to be the
difference in a 4-3 win.
Richmond Hill advanced
to the quarterfinals with
the victory, but was defeat
ed 7-0 by Chattahoochee
on Saturday.
Richmond Hill led
Apalachee 2-0 at half
time on goals by Agboade
Sobowate and Joseph
Petrino and upped its lead
to 3-0 early in the second
half on another score by
Sobowate.
Apalachee (13-4-1)
came roaring back, though,
with a pair of goals to cut
the deficit to 3-2.
Then came Logan Mer
ry's controversial shot.
With 15:57 remaining in
the match, Merry took a
pass from Bryan Jackson
and shot it on goal past
Apalachee goalkeeper
Johnny Navarro to give
Richmond Hill a 4-2 lead.
Apalachee coach Chad
Hooper had a prolonged
and heated discussion with
the officials, arguing, to no
avail, that it was not a goal
but had hit the side netting
instead.
“From my vantage point
it looked like the ball went
into the net, and the official
called it a goal immediate
ly,” Richmond Hill coach
Robbie Flanders said. “I
don't blame him for argu
ing. I would have, too.”
Hooper maintained his
position Monday and said
Apalachee submitted video
of the match to the GHSA.
The GHSA subsequently
ruled the goal was a judg
ment call by the officials.
“The ball hit the side of
the net and it was so obvi
ous that their guys weren’t
even celebrating and our
guys went and got the ball
and were setting up for a
goal kick,” Hooper said.
“Then the center ref
started pointing to the mid
dle of the field and said the
linesman had called it a
goal. He said the linesman
had a better view of it but
there’s no way he could
have seen that.”
Hooper said that sever
al Richmond Hill players
even made statements to
the ref that the shot was not
a goal, though Flanders did
not contest the call.
“I told those (Rich
mond Hill) kids after the
game I was proud of them
for trying to do the right
thing,” Hooper said. “We
don’t ever like losing, but
it really hurts to lose in a
way like that when it was
so blatant that it wasn’t
a goal. The shot was so
wide I never even thought
calling a goal on it was an
option. I thought they were
trying to call a comer kick,
if anything.”
Apalachee scored on a
corner kick with 10:33 to
play but, despite heavy
pressure, could not push
across another goal against
Richmond Hill keeper
Drew Crawford.
The loss marked a bit
ter end to a strong sea
son for the Wildcats, who
recovered from a couple of
early losses in their GHSA
Region 8-AAAAAA
schedule to finish second
in the region. Senior cap
tain David Santana was
named region player of
the year while freshman
Nestor Perla was also a
first-team selection. Benoit
Dastous and Navarro were
second-team selections.

“We really pulled it
together after those first
couple of losses and David
was a big part of that,”
Hooper said. “He picked
it up this year as a captain
and showed great leader
ship on and off the field.
His energy helped us kick
it up a notch through the
second half of the season.
He was always uplifting
and positive.”
