Twelve students qualified
for the national conference.
Eleven went. The 12th, Tay
lor Gray, did not because
she was at the Governors
Honors Program at Berry
College.
Garren has big expecta
tions for 2018.
“I expect quite a few tro
phies” this year at nation
als. she declared. She hopes
to take 15 to 17 students to
the national in spring 2018.
Garren, who is in her first
year as head coach of the
girls' basketball team, set
a high level for students in
the fall of 2016. She also
played softball and tennis
at WBHS.
It was her first group of
seniors - “it started really
with those freshmen” in the
2012-13 school year.
She told the TSA stu
dents at the beginning of
2016 “don't even sign up
for a project if that’s (get to
nationals) not your goal.”
She appropriated Clem-
son football coach Dabo
Swiney's theme of “Natty
Bound.”
“It was a ‘holy cow’
(moment) at state.” Gar
ren said, when they saw
Jacob’s motorcycle against
his competition.
“His motorcycle still
stood out” at the national
conference, “His was that
much better,” she said.
He also designed and
constructed a garage/shop
for the motorcycle.
The TSA club has about
40 students. Of those, 24
went to the state last spring.
As school starts this year,
Garren said eight freshmen
have signed up for the club.
She said about 3,000 stu
dents were at the state com
petition. The national con
ference had about 8,000.
The TSA club is not
cheap. It costs about
$21,000 to operate for a
year. Garren said the kids
work the concession stand
for football and basketball
and make things that can be
sold. Donations from local
businesses, including sup
plies, also help.
Garren is a WBHS grad
uate and former point guard
at the school. She earned
a master’s degree in edu
cation at the University
of Georgia. She got her
undergraduate degree at
Piedmont College.
Both of her parents are
longtime teachers, and her
father. Ron Garren, is the
WBHS boys basketball
coach.
“These are not kids that
came in with the knowl
edge and experience to do
this.” Garren said.
“They learned from
scratch.”
She adds, “I help manage
the kids. I literally could
not sit down and design
that bike.”
