Letters to the Editor
On SPLOST...
Dear Editor:
I want to thank you for your excellent
coverage of the called meeting of the
Barrow County Commissioners, during
which the commission approved placing
the SPLOST question on the ballot in
November.
In the article, you identified me as the
Chairman of the Barrow County Library
Board of Trustees.
I do serve in that capacity, but my com
ments during the meeting were my own,
and do not represent the position of the
Library Trustees.
As a matter of fact, the Trustees have
never discussed SPLOST as it does not
impact library operations.
Thank you for allowing me to make this
clarification.
Sincerely,
Robert Lanham

Sen. McCain was not alone
Dear Editor:
Last week, Zach Mit
cham, editor of the
Madison County Jour
nal praised Sen. John
McCain’s bravery
for voting “No” to the
Republican plan to repeal
Obamacare.
McCain chose to put
people over party. He,
however, was not alone.
Sens. Susan Collins of
Maine and Lisa Murkow-
ski of Alaska repeatedly
stood up to their party
and for their constituents
and voted “No” to each
punitive health care pro
posal presented by the
Republican-controlled
Senate and House.
Sen. Murkowski did
not back down when the
MINO (man-in-name-on-
ly) occupying the White
House threatened retali
ation.
Those women knew
that what Mitch McCon
nell and Trump support
ed was not better than
Obamacare as promised,
but would make lives of
millions worse. Sens.
Collins and Murkow
ski bravely withstood
the wrath of their fellow
Republicans and MINO
long before Sen. McCain
decided to join them.
It is sad that neither
of our senators, Isakson
and Perdue, could mus
ter up the gumption to
vote no. Republican Sen.
Isakson made a speech
on the Senate floor stat
ing that “repealing it
(Obamacare) without a
replacement is an unac
ceptable solution. It’s not
a solution. It’s a conun
drum.”
Then he voted to do
just that...repeal the
ACA, cut Medicaid and
throw a half million or
more Georgians in the
ditch.
I was not surprised
by Sen. David Perdue’s
votes. He basically does
what the Koch brothers
and special interests tell
him even if it’s not good
for the citizens of Geor
gia.
His legal immigration
restrictions are sure to
boost Georgia’s agricul
tural, poultry and carpet
industries.
But hey, Perdue prob
ably has coal miners
chopping at the bit to
come to Georgia to pick
up pecans, tuft carpet,
and gut chickens.
And of course, Con
gressman Jody Hice,
pro-life until you are
born, pledges to contin
ue the fight to abolish
government involvement
in healthcare.
It is good to know that
there are women of back
bone like Sen. Susan Col
lins and Sen. Lisa Murkow
ski running for Congress in
2018 such as Ret. Lt. Col.
Amy McGrath of Kentucky
and Chalis Montgomery of
Barrow County.
Sincerely,
Peggy Perkins

RANDOM RANTS IN RHYME
Prayer of Praise
Heavenly Father, to You we raise
this our voice of infinite praise
to You the creator of heaven and earth,
who knew our forms before our birth.
Though You are infinite and we are so small,
You invite us, in prayer, on You to call.
You have created this vast universe
that mortal man can never traverse,
nor even see the end of its scope
with his strongest radar telescope.
Yet You have thousands of galaxies
with planets that orbit in paths that You choose.
You are eternal. You are supreme.
You hold vast knowledge of which man can only dream..
You are the Alpha and the Omega -
yet You are the source to whom man may go
with any problem, large or small,
and You will answer whenever we call.
At Your call, nations rise and fall,
for You, Heavenly Father, are over them all -
yet You even note the sparrow’s fall.
Nothing is too large or too small
for You to notice and to care
when we come to You in earnest prayer.
We acknowledge Your earned Lordship.
You alone are worthy of worship.
The heavens and earth join us in praise
to you, the Ancient of all Days.
If we fail to praise, then beyond all doubt,
even the very rocks would cry out.
Words fail to paint the entire story
of Your magnificence and glory.
We mortal Christians fall at your feet
and praise You for making our lives complete.
Our praise never ceases for the sending of Your Son,
whose mercy and grace makes all of us one.
In closing this litany of worship and praise,
the words of Walter C. Smith we raise:
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great Name we praise.

A GREAT, EXPERIENCED
FACULTY - We are blessed to
enter our 48th year with one of
the best and most experienced
faculty we have ever had. Our
faculty averages over 20 years
of professional experience, and
more than half of our teachers
have a Masters degree or above.
We are thrilled to add a
seasoned veteran to our high
school Math department and
a former head of school to our
Middle School faculty.
But the most important thing
about our faculty is not their
experience or degrees. The
most important thing is they are
100% committed to serving the
ACS families as they minister in
God’s Kingdom here in Athens.
We are really looking forward
to this year!
