Apalachee’s Parks outdueled in 1-0 loss at Lanier
The Apalachee baseball team
got a sterling effort from starting
pitcher Hunter Parks on Monday,
but Lanier’s Zach Murray was a
little bit better.
Murray gave up just three hits
and struck out eight as he pitched
a complete-game 1-0 shutout over
the Wildcats in the first of a three-
game GHSA Region 8-AAAAAA
series.
It was the third straight loss for
Apalachee, which dropped to 12-5
overall and 1-3 in region play.
The Longhorns (12-7, 3-1)
scored the game's lone run in
the bottom of the sixth inning on
a two-out RBI single by Austin
Paschall. That spoiled a terrific
outing by Parks, who surrendered
only five hits, struck out five and
allowed just two walks.
The Wildcats got off to a prom
ising start in the top of the sev
enth when DJ Smith led off with
a single. But Murray induced a
ground-ball double play off the
bat of Nate Hodnett and then
fanned Parker Miller to preserve
the victory.
Apalachee mustered two more
scoring threats earlier in the game.
Its best chance came in the third
when Jake Hopkins led off with
a single and courtesy runner
Joey Salvaggio stole second with
nobody out. But Murray worked
around the jam, getting Jarrett
Wallace to fly out and striking out
Chase Chancey before Salvaggio
was caught stealing third to end
the inning.
For the first time this season,
the Wildcats find themselves in
a losing streak. After taking the
first of a three-game region series
against Habersham Central on
March 21, the Wildcats lost a pair
of games in Mount Airy, 3-0 on
Thursday and 5-1 on Friday. In
the 3-0 loss, the Raiders scored all
three of their runs in the bottom
of the first and then watched as
Shandon Lee tossed a three-hit
shutout. Alex Cook went the dis
tance for Apalachee, allowing just
one earned run on three hits while
striking out nine.
In the 5-1 loss, the Wildcats
grabbed an early lead in the top of
the first when Smith led off with a
single, stole second, advanced to
third on a passed ball and scored
on a sacrifice fly by Miller. But
the Raiders scored a run of their
own in the bottom of the frame
and then added one in the third,
two in the fourth and one in the
sixth to take control. The Wildcats
managed just two hits off Haber
sham starter Colby Jones. The
other hit besides Smith’s came on
a leadoff single by Miller in the
fourth. But Jones got a flyout and
induced a ground ball for a double
play to erase the threat.
The Wildcats were scheduled
to continue their series with the
Longhorns at 5:55 p.m. Wednes
day at Apalachee.
They’11 wrap up the series Fri
day at 5:55 p.m. back at Lanier,
and the Wildcats will then open
up a three-game set with Dacula
at home Monday.

Tuesday’s win helped
snap a two-game losing
skid, which included an
11-0 home region loss to
Dominion Christian on

gion defeat at Gate-
wood on Monday. Chase
Appling started the Gate-
wood game on the hill and
worked five innings and
recorded four strikeouts.
At the plate, Jacob
Adams had a double and
drove in two runs. Klein
also had an RBI single,
and Whitlow had a double

“We had our chances,”
Nicks said of Monday’s
loss. “It was a back and
forth game.”

Holy Spirit last Thursday,
Brock Harris started the
game on the mound, going
2 1/3 innings and allowing
six runs. Klein went the
rest of the way allowing
four runs with only one of
them earned.
Wallace and Whitlow
both homered. Adams,
Russell Kiser and Klein
helped lead the offense
with multiple hits in the
contest, which was a slug-
